![]() | ![]() Hello. My name is Scott and I live in the south suburbs of Chicago . . . but why am I here ? My company chose me to take part in a team triathlon this coming August 25th. I was chosen to do the swimming portion of it, and I am excited to try, but extremely nervous to try. I have never done anything like this and have been trying to read up how to prepare for the last few days, as well as actually getting in the pool. The good news is I am in good condition for the most part. I am 30 years old now, 5' 7", 165lbs. I play racquetball, and 16" softball often, and for the last 5 months have been working out every day and eating very healthy. So the steps leading up to me being selected are all positive. After a couple days in the pool however, I have realized just how extremely tough this is going to be. I've basically just been trying to do 50m laps in the 25m lap pool with a 45 - 60 second break in between. I get fatigued rather quick, but I think it is due to me over-doing it. I think I just need to relax, and remember it's a marathon, not a sprint ! ![]() I am very motivated about this challenge, and am taking it very serious. I just hope there are enough days before Aug 25th for me to get into swimming 1500m shape ! ![]() Obviously any tips would be much appreciated. Thanks all !! |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Welcome! Glad you decided to take up the challenge! Tri is a fun and addictive sport! If you're dedicated in training for it, you'll get through that swim fine. What kind of aerobic exercise have you been doing? Just keep at it. A few resources to help you along: - Google this: "Ruth Kazez 0 to 1650 in 6 weeks" that program helped me. - swimsmooth.com This is a little more overwhelming, but does have great beginner articles and swim critique videos so you know what it's supposed to and not supposed to look like. - YouTube Looking up "how to swim freestyle" will give you tons of video which all say essentially the same thing with different terminology. Find one that makes sense to you and watch it before heading to the pool. - beginnertriathlete.com There are lots of swimming articles here, not to mention the regular forum. There are people on here that beat sharks in 5k open water marathons. Good luck! Welcome to the club! - Joel |

![]() | ![]() Thanks for the tip ! I checked that website out, and it seems like that is a really good place to start. I need to incorporate more cardio into my routine, so I am slowly working on that. |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Welcome! Company sending you to one? Wish mine would, jealous! My tri coach has me to distance and speed work separate. Sometimes I do 50s and 100s fast. Sometimes I push my longest swim. Sometimes I kinda do both.... So I have a 1500 also coming up for an Olympic tri. During my swims I may do 500s at a fast pace 3 of them with a break between each. Of course I am further along. When I started a couple laps was all I could do. Lots of muscle memory in swimming, keep at it. It will get easier. |
