Set Up Events
74F / 23C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 02m 8s
Overall Rank = 3/12
Age Group = Relay
Age Group Rank = 3/12
Event warmup:

No warm up
Swim
  • 05m 36s
  • 300 yards
  • 01m 52s / 100 yards
Comments:

I got in the crowd and made my way to the start. I passed 13-15 swimmers due to being in the weak swimming group. I had no problem passing but nobody was worth drafting.

I figure the run down the hill was about 45 seconds which should be in transition time but was counter in the swim. So I swam about a 4:51 which is good for a 1:37 per 100.

The swim order went to pot about 100 people in. It became a fight to get to the mat and start your swim. No organization at all.
What would you do differently?:

Figure out how a 1:35/100 swimmer got to be 242 in the seeding, if it was due to being on a relay then they need to fix this part of the system.
Transition 1
  • 00m 40s
Comments:

I ran in pulled the chip off my ankle and handed it to my wife for the bike start.
What would you do differently?:

I had no clue where her bike rack was in transition, so I had to listen for her voice and look for her pink tri suit.
Bike
  • 30m 3s
  • 9 miles
  • 17.70 mile/hr
Comments:

Came out strong and found a good rhythm after the first lap. Used the first lap to really get a good feel for the course and learn the bumps. The second and third laps went much faster. (my wife's comments)
What would you do differently?:

practice more on the bike with hills
Transition 2
  • 00m 33s
Comments:

Just a dismount run to the rack and change ankle chips.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 25m 18s
  • 5 kms
  • 05m 05s  min/km
Comments:

At .5 I picked up our runner and stayed motivating her throughout the course. before the race her and my wife were joking about what if she could run a 25:00 and what it would feel like. So I had a goal and made her stick with an 7:45 pace per mile through the first 2 miles, then she was going to give out I slowed the pace a bit and picked up my wife at the finish line and we all crossed together.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing (it was my first run in 2 weeks because of a severely sprained ankle.
Post race
Warm down:

we ate stuff and walked a bit, just waited for awards because we were sure that we were in the top 3 for team relay.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

not much other than swim seeding for the starting and my wife practicing more hills on the bike.

Event comments:

I will be back but they had several major flaws during the race. 1st was the swim seeding but that has been covered above. Next is bathroom availability for 300+ people there was 1 stall and 1 urinal in the mens room and 2 stalls in the womens restroom, lines were too long and the bathrooms overflowed shutting down the bathrooms and forcing people into the Y. They should have had portapotties or just open the Y from the start. Next the volunteers were either not helpful or not in the right spot, nobody was manning the mount/dismount line out of T1 until malone of malone coaching saw a need and jumped in. The police were great and did a great job controlling the road and keeping it shut down from traffic. There were many volunteers just standing around the finish line with no clue what was going on and no real explanation of their purpose. Last, the MC was probably the best ever at the finish line.

congrats on the podium, i agree the swim seeding was a mess and the pool didn't really allow for passing.

the MC was awesome too, Set Up needs to hire him for all the races they do in the area. Pretty sure he is one of the swim instructors for the Y

This is not an easy task, especially for the “9-to-5er” with family. But you can do it – all without sacrificing your marriage, job or family.

My training was taking off. I had never felt stronger. I was making bigger strides than I ever had. I was stronger and faster than I had imagined myself ever being.
