Subject: Podium finishers and their bikes
Between pros and age groupers, are there many podium finishers that complete the bike leg on a road bike (rather than a tri bike)? I'm asking the question very generally across all race distances. The reason I ask is that I'm contemplating a road bike upgrade or an add-on tri bike purchase. Just want to get a feel if I can still be competitive on a nice road bike. I'm thinking it might be more benefit on hilly courses, but what do I know...

yes you can be competitive on a road bike.

No, most pro's don't ride road bikes.

Generally a tri bike is going to be the faster option.

Right. Everything I've read is that the tri bike is going to be faster due to the aero position of the body, but they can be slower on hilly courses. Having not ridden one for more than a mile myself, does a tri bike really save that much energy in your legs for the run?

Unless you're TT'ing up something like L'Alpe d'Huez, a purpose-built tri bike is going to be faster.  But at the end of the day the engine is still the most important thing.

The thing about a tri bike saving your legs for the run falls into the category of urban myth.

bike fitness and run fitness (and not overcooking the bike) are what help your run off of the bike.

Unless you are riding some unbelievably tough uphill races, (not many in the US that I'm aware of) then you are going to be faster on a well fit tri bike vs. road bike (all other things being equal)

I've podiumed in AG races on my road bike. That being said I am looking to get a tri bike for the non-draft race stuff (the majority of races) since it is faster because of the superior position. I don't think any non-draft pros ride road bikes. Typically at that level they will have a road bike for draft legal and a Tri bike for non-draft since every second counts literally, especially at the shorter distances the higher up the ranks you go.

I'm riding a 2002 Raleigh r600 road bike (aluminum frame, stock components and wheels). Do you think upgrading the road bike to a new all carbon frame will get me much of a speed boost?

It will likely give you zero speed boost.

actually disagree... although the bike being carbon doesn't really have anything to do with it.
going from a road bike to a tri bike (with a good fit) should be a pretty significant boost in speed.

I believe the OP was asking if going from his current road bike to a new road bike would give him a speed boost, to which I would reply no. Now if he meant going to a tri bike, than of course YES! It would be a huge improvement.

Yea, i was asking going from road bike to road bike. I think I'll use my money on a tri bike and just keep the old roadie.

(Backdoor Brag Alert)

I got 3rd in my AG a couple of weeks ago and use a Ti road bike w/ clip-on aerobars. I want a tri bike and am saving up the $$, but in the meantime I use what I have. I had the second fastest bike time for my AG.

Even better, it's a cyclocross bike (but w/ road tires).

  • ...of course, the flip side to this is that a tri bike might've gotten me the fastest bike time, and since I missed 2nd place by 0.39 seconds, a tri bike might've gotten me up one more place.

  • Either way, I don't have a tri bike and it is what it is.

Yes you can absolutely be competitive on a road bike (even a cross bike!)... but I'd say only to a degree.  If you're doing small-ish local events then you might be able to capture a podium but if you're going to do a higher profile type event not having a tri/tt bike will really hinder your potential.

I've won my AG and set a top-5 bike split on a road bike. It was miserable road conditions and raining, combined with a fairly technical course. I do have a tri bike but the road bike was definitely a better choice that day

I'm pretty sure Chrissie wellington didn't switch to a tri bike until right before she one Kona the first time. She won at least one ironman on a road bike, but she is exceptional.

As a female (35-39 & 40-44 AG's), I have placed in my AG at multiple sprints on a road bike. Got 4th out of 12 at my last Oly on my road bike.

As for HIM and IM distances, in my case, it's not the bike, but the rider that makes it slow! Ha!

Throw on clip on aeros and you'll be 90% of there way there in terms of speed gains compared to a TT bike; this is assuming your road seat position still works with clipon extended position.

The triathlon bike vs. road bike quandary. Before you even ask the road bike vs. tri bike question, you should have a couple sprint triathlons or duathlons under your belt.

More than any other factor – including distances in other sports, weight, height – time on bike proved important for faster performance.
