Subject: Encouraging a gym rat through a half marathon
My wife is a personal trainer and is a power-lifter. She loves lifting hard and is very fit and strong, but she hates running. She is not an endurance person AT ALL.

She wanted to encourage me and is doing a half marathon in 16 days (The day after my HIM).

She has trained for it, but training has not been easy for her. Since she has supported me, I really want to give her some support during the race.

I am trying to figure out how to light-heartedly encourage her in a "you don't belong here, gym rat!" kind of way and need some ideas from people not emotionally invested in the situation.

Help me out!

At Mile 1:
"You are NOT almost there! Suck it up!"
"13 miles until you can hit the weights"

I was thinking about holding up a "Just 2 more" sign at 6 miles. And then at 8 miles. And then at 10 miles. At 12 miles hold up a sign that says, "Now you know how it feels to hear that!"

I am a VERY sarcastic person and I don't think I would appreciate this.

Some signs I've found funny in races are:

"Longest parade ever!"
"Most boring parade ever"

"Which way to the gun show?" (she might like that one!)

"chuck norris never ran 13.1 miles"

Why would you want to do it in that kind of way?

edit: ahh ok.. Now I get it. I like Comet's "longest parade ever" sign idea.

I've never seen anyone do this? I *have* seen a funny sign at the Mile 1 marker that says "12 more to go!" or "25 more to go!" which is funny in the I-wanna-punch-you-in-the-shoulder kind of way.

But I've never seen flat out lies/wrong mileage signs. Nor is is funny to me? Better would be "almost there" because people actually do start saying that just a few miles in.

I like signs like "My arms hurt holding this sign" or "Motivational saying here"

I guess I should of added that both my wife and I are very sarcastic, joking people. We have both been around the endurance community for a lot of years. We have both seen all of the generic signs.

She is not a delicate, gentle flower that gets her feelings hurt. She is a fighter. She is a weight trainer and personal trainer. Personal trainers squeeze more out of their clients by saying, "Just two more"...and then repeating it several times getting their clients to do more than they thought they could.

The idea behind it is that the client pushes past what they know they can do and see what they are capable of.

  • ..From the person lifting the weights it sucks.

  • I am quite sure my wife would laugh hysterically after the last sign. "Flat out lies" is pretty strong hyperbole in this situation.

I think if it were my family and that I was the one running, they would do something similar.  As long as you and your wife think it would be funny.  Why not, it is for you and her, not everyone else.  I see the humor in it and surely she would also.  Support her in running the 13.1 as she has supported you, and if this is a good thing for the two of you do it.

Life is too damn short!!!!  Enjoy it.

Go for it then! You don't need our permission Laughing

I've also "been around the endurance community for a lot of years" and an incorrect mileage sign would mildly annoy me. But I'm not your target audience, none of us are if this is purely an inside joke.

Then I say go for it!

SHE is the person you're making the signs for, and if you think SHE would laugh hysterically - give her that smile on the day of her race!

She will be runnining at 11:30 pace.

My wife is a marathon runner and we both have a good sense of humor. I thought about some signs that I always wanted to put up for my wife, so, if she likes sarcastic humor, how about:

Front of sign for her to see as she approaches you "Who signed up for this?"
When she sees you flip the sign around which says on the back, "Oh yeah, you did, you sicko!"

    -or-

"Hurry up already. I'm hungry and dinner won't cook itself."

-or, and depending what mile you are standing at waiting for her-

"Less than XX miles until beer thirty!"

Get on your bike and provide her rolling on course support and drinks. I do this for my wife, big boost during any low points in the run.

Go chauvinistic like "there's a kitchen at the end and my sammich won't make itself"

    My wife loves those jokes

Steady is our walk. Ignoring the pain that is radiating from my feet, I continue to place one foot in front of the other. Again I wonder, “Why am I doing this?”

This program should be used for an athlete whose goal is to run a marathon in the 1:30-2:30 range and has a good running base in the past 8-12 weeks.

I will assume you have not run consistently more than 6 miles and have never completed a half-marathon. I believe running your first half-marathon is a big task which requires dedication and work.

My training was taking off. I had never felt stronger. I was making bigger strides than I ever had. I was stronger and faster than I had imagined myself ever being.

I'm on the other side of the college-student desk. I'm the one with the red pen in my hand. Those of us with schedules that change from day to day actually have an advantage, I think.
