Vincentown, New Jersey
United States
DQ Events
85F / 29C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 28m 6s
Overall Rank = 82/150
Age Group = F45-49
Age Group Rank = 5/7
Pre-race routine:

PopTart and coffee for breakfast then drive to race site. Close to the house, only about 30 minutes away.
Event warmup:

Just a quick swim in the lake to work on my breathing and relaxing.
Swim
  • 10m 17s
  • 440 meters
  • 02m 20s / 100 meters
Comments:

I am not a strong swimmer yet. This is my first season of actually learning to swim; stroke, putting my face in the water, etc. Last year I swam all my races using the "Tarzan" style.
What would you do differently?:

Keep learning and don't panic that you are last. Capitalize on your comfort in the open water and RELAX.
Transition 1
  • 00m 56s
Comments:

Knowing that my swim was slow I came out of the water like a water buffalo! I always make up time getting in and out of transition, as it seems like easy time savings (compared to swimming faster!)
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Bike
  • 43m 39s
  • 15 miles
  • 20.59 mile/hr
Comments:

Maybe I pushed too hard??? It's hard to balance the way I usually ride (like an animal) with the heat that day. I most likely did push too hard for the weather conditions but I always ride hard.
What would you do differently?:

Perhaps take it a little easier on the bike. Perhaps.
Transition 2
  • 01m 10s
Comments:

Fell off bike at dismount line. Yup. I'm that person.
What would you do differently?:

LEARN TO MOUNT/DISMOUNT WITH SHOES ATTACHED TO BIKE. Already practicing that this week for next week's race.
Run
  • 32m 6s
  • 5 kms
  • 06m 31s  min/km
Comments:

SUCKED. SUCKED. SUCKED. My run pace was my "easy" run pace on training days. After the fact I know it was the heat but I still am angry that I couldn't just push through the discomfort.
What would you do differently?:

Pace myself a little bit better on the bike and "ease" into the run off the bike.???? Or not race when it is so hot and I am a wildebeest...???
Post race
Warm down:

Almost puked and would sell my soul for water. Coach Booger pointed me directly to the fire hose where I stood until my brain cells stopped sizzling.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The fact that I am a novice (at best) swimmer and the heat.

Event comments:

I love DQ's events and I do as many of them as I can fit into my schedule each year. I find them to be very down to earth and cool folks. Last year at this race I flatted on the bike course so this was my revenge. Next year I avenge the run course!!!!

Course: Out and back swim in very still lake. Water was cleaner this year than last year. Apparently was wetsuit legal though I am very surprised because it felt warm. A lot of people did wear suits.

Overall: 113/150
Performance: Bad
Course: Flat but first 2/3rds in the sun. Oh WOW it was hot as soon as I got out of transition it hit me and I knew it was gonna get REAL. Woman 62 and 48 passed me like I was a wounded wildebeest about 1/8th mile into the run. UGH crushed my mental game. Allowed myself about a minute of pity at mile 1 marker then said it was only gonna take longer to get home if I walked so I sucked it up and worked on my (nonexistent) form.

My first triathlon was at age 56. At first I was just the cameraman at my daughter's first triathlon, then I am doing the races that she has done.
