Subject: Confusion: Garmin Connect vs Training Peaks??
Totally confused here. I did a Half-Iron Aquabike last month and used my Garmin 305 during the bike segment with cadence sensor, ect. I downloaded the race file into Garmin Connect and into Training Peaks websites. Both websites have same race distance and time, and same avg speed. But....when it comes to elevation and calories burned, totallly different.

Garmin Connect has 931ft of elevation change with 4710 calories burned.
Training Peaks has 3271 ft of elevation change with 2449 calories burned.

Am I missing something stupid here, or am I just the stupid one? Which one is correct?

I have had issues off-and-on with Garmin Connect, so I have been trying out the Training Peaks website and downloading into there instead. Not sure of which one to go with now?

Any similar issues or suggestions?

Thanks

The 305 is notorious for elevation errors due to the fact that the elevation is measured by GPS vs how the newer series of Garmin measures. I would ignore it. As for calories, did you put the same input for age, height, etc, for the device, and both websites? Garmin also has a bit of an issue of overestimating. Both websites used different mathematics to calculate everything. Confused? try uploading stuff to Strava. I could NEVER have my data on my Garmin 305 match what Strava shows. Sometimes its off by 2-5 minutes, and MPH avg, calories, and elevations is way off!

I'm not sure which one is more "accurate" though...

When I went from the Garmin 305 to 910xt, the calorie count went WAY down.

Garmin connect will calculate my caloric burn even if I don't wear a HRM. I have no idea ow it can do this with accuracy.

If calorie count and elevation really mean a lot to you then I would investigate it further. In all honesty I find those both to be fairly worthless metrics.

The calorie count is usually off on my Garmin Connect readout. My 6 mile run had me burning 2200 calories. If that's the case I should run 6 miles more often

The 910xt uses HR to calculate calories burned. The 305 does not.
I'd imagine this is the main reason for the difference in values.

scroll down to the bottom of the left side of your garmin connect screen.

under where it says "additional information" there will be a picture of your device, and below that 'elevation correction'.

you want to have the elevation correction 'enabled', especially if you have a device with no air pressure sensor.  If your device is getting its elevation from GPS, it's notoriously noisy.  So, every time the elevation jumps up and down 20 feet- it thinks you're climbing and descending.  Enabling correction, compares your route to GIS mapping elevation and just plots your course.

make sense?

I've had a few comparison problems with TP and GC.  When I upload to GC the elevation can be waaaaaaaay off too.  One thing that always is different is my total time, especially in the pool.  TP always takes the total time I'm involved in the workout, even when the watch is stopped.  So when I upload say a 20X100 workout with 15 seconds rest.  It will show the whole time in the calculation of average speed, etc.  Frustrating.
