Overcast
Total Time = 1h 47m 28s
Overall Rank = 365/709
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 46/70
Pre-race routine:

Biked 2 miles to the race in a down pour. Went home, rested while I checked twitter to see when the race would start. Watched some West Wing on netflix. At cereal while I waited and half a cliff bar right before the race.
Event warmup:

Biked to the race 4 hours before I started. My wave snuck up on me so I swam 40y and got in line.
Swim
  • 08m 9s
  • 500 yards
  • 01m 38s / 100 yards
Comments:

The water was crowded and the waves were choppy but I managed to find open water and swim as smooth as I can. Took several mouth-fulls of water but I was able to spit it out and breathe on my next stroke. I spend some time maneuvering around people which slowed me down a little.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, I think I did as well as I can!
Transition 1
  • 03m 11s
Comments:

I just got tri-specific bike shoes with one velcro strap so I was able to leave them clipped in and get into them on the bike. The transition area is huge! I felt like I ran with the bike forever.
Bike
  • 56m 43s
  • 16.8 miles
  • 17.70 mile/hr
Comments:

I get faster each race! I would have been slightly faster but my aero bar came loose from all the bouncing so I had to ride almost all of the course on the handlebars. I missed the aero position on the second half of the course that was into the wind.
What would you do differently?:

Work more on speed and power.
Transition 2
  • 02m 54s
Comments:

I got caught behind 3 people that wanted to walk their bikes instead of running. I had to wait a bit to be able to run around them. Otherwise I felt fast.
Run
  • 36m 29s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 11m 49s  min/mile
Comments:

Oy. This was a terrible run but more victorious than the time gives credit for. I've been fighting off a calf injury and took the past 3 weeks off running. The morning of the race I thought I was going to have to DNF and skip the run. I managed to run to the first drink station - just past mile one - and walk/run the other two miles. I'm thrilled I was able to finish the race!!
What would you do differently?:

Not be injured. I'm thinking of getting a running coach because there must be something wrong with my mechanics based on how slowly I have to run and how often I get injured.
Post race
Warm down:

Complimentary massage!!!!

Event comments:

LTF can't control the weather and I think they did a good job of making changes the day of in order to get everyone racing. On the other hand, I felt like the whole thing was a big ad, including the shirt that looks more like a toyota advertisement than a tri shirt. It was also incredibly crowded. I really wanted to do this race because I live so close to the course but the bike course is in such poor condition that it's frustrating. I also don't think this race is worth the premium cost.

After I left the running store, I couldn't stop thinking about the sprint tri and how much of a challenge it would be for me. So instead of joining a gym, I started riding my bike and it felt great.

A product review of the Louis Garneau Tri Air Triathlon Shoe. After nearly two years of testing, see how this shoe performed. Currently being replaced by the Tri Air 2.

I couldn’t help but feel that the race had beaten me. Perhaps duathlons were more for me? No, I was more determined than ever to succeed. I was determined to get on top of my swimming.

A powerful attraction of the calories in/calories out paradigm is its apparent simplicity. Unfortunately, the human body isn’t so simple and that is why this seemingly wonderful formula doesn't work.

This life of mine is not so different from yours. It has a multitude of similarities. I suffer from uncertainty, I get nervous at the thought of registering and when getting to the starting line.

I am not going to buy a tri-suit before my first tri - I want to make sure I am going to stick with this before I spend a lot of money on it so I want to figure out what will work best.

I couldn't believe that my splits kept getting lower! I started to run harder after I passed the "5 km" sign and picked a few people that I wanted to pass.
