Pre-race routine:

breakfast of a banana and wheat bagel with peanut butter.
Set up transition area and walked through T1 and T2.
Potty break.
Event warmup:

None. Walked up to swim in point and found John A. We said a quick prayer and the race started.
Swim
  • 09m 47s
  • 650 meters
  • 01m 31s / 100 meters
Transition 1
  • 00m 46s
Comments:

Not a bad T1 but I am still learning the best way to mount my QR and get into my shoes quickly.
What would you do differently?:

Need to practice mounting and getting into shoes more to get comfortable.
Bike
  • 57m 18s
  • 18.8 miles
  • 19.47 mile/hr
Comments:

First race on my Quintana Roo Caliente. Max speed was 40.6 mph on the descent from the big hill. There is a little bit of a curve to the right and one point and I had a hard time keeping a good line because I was going so fast. I didn't go over the yellow line so it was no problem, just made me nervous.
Transition 2
  • 00m 51s
Comments:

Not enough room to rack my bike in its space so I had to move a Felt over to fit mine in.
Run
  • 25m 29s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m 12s  min/mile
Comments:

Got off to a slow start but my legs felt a little better than usual. Sucked down a Power gel during the first mile. Did not pick up the pace until the last mile. Because of side stitch.
Post race
Warm down:

Stretch and walked to stay loose. Knee felt a little sore but the pain faded pretty quickly.

Event comments:

This is my favorite race. Love the river swim, bike out into Powhatan, and trail run. The BBQ from the Tavern Restaurant is very good.

Course: The 18.8 mile bike is on rural roads heading west toward 288 and Powhatan. Racers will make a lefthand turn on Manakintown Ferry Rd. after the church. This very nice and lowly populated road has 2 gradual climbs. The hill climb on Manakintown is substantial (3 percent and is just under 1.7 miles in length. The elevation change is approximately 194 ft) and you will need to train for it or walk it. It is very ridable, up to you. The midway point on the course is a U-turn just before Page Rd. You fly back down then make a right turn back onto Robious Rd (Huguenot trail). There is no bottle handoff on the bike.

Nice race! Now that I've conquered the hill, I've decided I like the course too. And a "Caliente" bike just sounds fast...have fun getting used to her.

I am not suggesting that I have turned into Aquaman or have grown gills or that I am a really great swimmer. I am none of those. But I have learned to love the swim.

I had been very fit until I turned the legal age for the two demons: drinking and smoking. Unfortunately, from my 18th birthday, my once fit swimmer's body went downhill and wide very fast.
