Comments:

This swim was nasty. Probably the 2nd worst swim I have had, Lake Minnetonka only being worse because it was longer. Last tri in june was also rough, with white caps. but this one had white caps and big rolling waves. you could feel your body dropping off the back of waves and getting slammed into them at the bottom of the rollers, it was crazy. first 2/3 of course was either directly in or cross, coming back they were mainly helping which was nice. had a huge wave, about 45 racers. I am realizing I am a decent swimmer so I lined up to the front to avoid the certain chaos and it worked. 12th out of 42 in my age group, so I'll take it.
What would you do differently?:

swim more... wanted to get at least one or two more swims in (still not enough) but was having some shoulder issues, the rest seemed to help as it didn't really act up until that last few mins.

pretty happy with this as well. again the common theme as with all my races and I was not very trained up. need to change that trend, anyways, my fastest bike split in a race to date. really gave up a lot in the first 3-4 miles while tring to recovery from the swim. first half of course is pretty brutal with some climbs. 2nd half is fast/flat/paved bike path
What would you do differently?:

nothing really, would have like to pushed harder in first 3 miles but didn't have the fitness level to get heart rate in check. it was a fun bike.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Run
  • 33m 6s
  • 2.8 miles
  • 11m 59s  min/mile
Comments:

while encouraged by having fewer pain free runs this summer, there have also been far fewer runs. This was about what I expected/hoped for, but it was work. struggled off the bike (maybe due to having a good bike split) but after first walk break got breathing in check and felt pretty good through first two miles but coming home was a difference story.
What would you do differently?:

if I am going to do more tri's and hope to show any improvement I need to run more . 12ish min/miles is down right horrible. if I can get closer to 10 min/miles (whis still isn't all that fast) I could have much more respectable times.
Post race
Warm down:

had a huge cheering section which was great. ran the finishing chute with my son which was cool (even if it eliminated my sprint to the finish line :) )
In-laws, nephew, parents, wife and two boys were all out in the 50 degree weather with gail force winds, could not tell it was end of july that's forsure. Ran into my firend Kristin who was also racing and I was able to hold her off until exactly the 1/2 way mark on the run. grabbed a little food/water, its a small low key race, so there isn't a ton post race but its plenty.

My first triathlon was at age 56. At first I was just the cameraman at my daughter's first triathlon, then I am doing the races that she has done.

As a sports-parent, you can be a good role model for athleticism and healthful food choices. What can you do to regain control without becoming the food police?
