Lehman, Pennsylvania
United States
72F / 22C
Overcast
Total Time = 3h 03m
Overall Rank = 97/158
Age Group = 45-49
Age Group Rank = 6/13
Pre-race routine:

Wake up 4:15 banana, yogurt with granola, half bagel with peanut butter, 2 bottles water and a coffee. drive to finish area and T2 at Penn State Lehman campus, setup T2 shoes and hop on bus to start/T1 location.
Event warmup:

Couple trips to facilities, warm up swim of 200 yards. set up T1, bikes were dropped at T1 night before.
Swim
  • 35m 58s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 24s / 100 meters
Comments:

Didn't push very hard on the swim, but swam and comfortable relaxed pace. Had to pee on the home stretch and that caused me to slow down to a breast stroke, going in the water you really keep on going LOL, but I figured it saved more time then running to bathroom in T1.
What would you do differently?:

Push a bit harder and pick up stroke count/cadence. Overall for my first Oly and long competitive swim I was fine with performance.
Transition 1
  • 02m 25s
Comments:

My best T1 yet, plus I had to stuff everything into garbage bag so they can transport your swim stuff back to finish location.
What would you do differently?:

As always try to speed things up a hair
Bike
  • 1h 18m 23s
  • 40 kms
  • 30.65 km/hr
Comments:

PA roads are not good. Course did not have a big elevation gain, but it was hilly, with plenty of rollers and some screaming downhills, couple short steep climbs.
What would you do differently?:

Through my chain on one of the quick uphills and had to dismount and put the chain back on, this caused about a 3 min delay by the time I got back up to speed. Shifting smoother probably would have prevented this or not skipping so many gears on the down shift.
Transition 2
  • 01m 13s
Comments:

good quick T2
What would you do differently?:

put bike in aero bars first instead of leaning bike to side to rack on seat post.
Run
  • 1h 05m 3s
  • 11 kms
  • 05m 55s  min/km
Comments:

Ran my usual 9:30ish pace but was really hoping to go faster, but the hills killed me and I felt like I was running 12min miles. The course was beautiful country dirt gravel and scenic, but some of the country roads were possible ankle rollers, had to pay attention to where your feet fell.
What would you do differently?:

Need to work on my running off the bike. It takes me a mile to get feeling in my toes and get my legs under me.
Post race
Warm down:

fruit water

What limited your ability to perform faster:

First Oly and a very demanding course

My first triathlon was at age 56. At first I was just the cameraman at my daughter's first triathlon, then I am doing the races that she has done.
