Chicago, Illinois
United States
90F / 32C
Sunny
Total Time = 3h 03m 3s
Overall Rank = 1034/2795
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 28/76
Pre-race routine:

Got up at 3:45 and was out the door by 4:10. Quick drive up to Chicago from Evanston. Even though my race wouldn't start until 8:10 I needed to be out of transition by 5:45... Crazy!! I was rushing in the dark and managed to lose my wallet.... I was lucky a fellow racet found it ... so no harm done :)
Event warmup:

I put my wetsuit on way too early .... so that warmed me up.... other than that I napped on the shore for a couple hours
Swim
  • 34m 13s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 17s / 100 meters
Comments:

I was in a wave with the 40-44 men and almost no women. The men tend to be more aggressive at the start (even though they are really better swimmers) They didn't do a great job self seeding and I got caught behind a wave of poor swimmers. I had to tread water several times to find holes to blast through.
What would you do differently?:

The swim was really meant to be a test of my new full wetsuit for Tahoe ... so it as all good. I actually liked the suit and I'm glad I paid a few extra bucks for more flexiblity.
Transition 1
  • 05m 34s
Comments:

I am the worlds worst transitioner :) That said I really don't try very hard to be fast.
Bike
  • 1h 12m 23s
  • 40 kms
  • 33.24 km/hr
Comments:

It was an nice easy course and just a few rollers. Lots of room and it was easy to get a good pace. potholes were a little bad in one small stretch but very managable. I really enjoyed the ride
Transition 2
  • 05m 13s
Comments:

really bad... I know ... but there was a porta potty stop included
Run
  • 1h 05m 38s
  • 10 kms
  • 06m 31s  min/km
Comments:

It was so hot and humid!! I'm really bad in heat but this was just crazy. My sunscreen wore off as well so I knew I was gettting fried. I managed to shuffle along and I walked the water stations. Given all that I'm actually happy with my super slow run because I at least managed to run most of it. Usually in this type of heat my body shuts down so the fact that I managed through it made me really happy.
Post race
Warm down:

I was sunburned big time so I tried to move through quickly to get out of the sun. It was quite a haul to get my pre swim gear and then get my tranistion stuff and then go all the way back to parking. That walk was a good cool-down

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The heat and my transition times. I just looked at my ranking in my age group... I lost like 8 positions by my crazy long transitions. I really need to dial those back in.

Event comments:

Fun race but the wait between tranistion close and race start kind of sucked. Its a big city race so there really isn't a lot they can do. The issue however is it place my wave right in the middle of high heat.

After I left the running store, I couldn't stop thinking about the sprint tri and how much of a challenge it would be for me. So instead of joining a gym, I started riding my bike and it felt great.

I couldn’t help but feel that the race had beaten me. Perhaps duathlons were more for me? No, I was more determined than ever to succeed. I was determined to get on top of my swimming.

A powerful attraction of the calories in/calories out paradigm is its apparent simplicity. Unfortunately, the human body isn’t so simple and that is why this seemingly wonderful formula doesn't work.

This life of mine is not so different from yours. It has a multitude of similarities. I suffer from uncertainty, I get nervous at the thought of registering and when getting to the starting line.

I am not going to buy a tri-suit before my first tri - I want to make sure I am going to stick with this before I spend a lot of money on it so I want to figure out what will work best.

I couldn't believe that my splits kept getting lower! I started to run harder after I passed the "5 km" sign and picked a few people that I wanted to pass.
