Sunny
Total Time = 2h 53m
Overall Rank = 7548/9853
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 541/646
Pre-race routine:

I woke.. laid on the floor. got in race mode.. focused on todays objective.. which was to just finish the race.. I had no expectation of time...

I was majorily under trained for this event.. my longest run was 3.5 miles for the year, and that was like 2 weeks prior to this event..

CRAZY I KNOW.. I formed a planned and i worked it to the best of my ability
Event warmup:

a brisk warm to rally point.. long line at the porta jon.. i think they need to institute a pee only.. amazing how long i had to wait to pee.. thats another story.. I did some active stretching and picking on my friends. typical maurice fashion..
Run
  • 2h 53m
  • 13.25 miles
  • 13m 04s  min/mile
Comments:

My plan was to initially run 8 mins and walk 2 mins.. after i got moving, I kept a slow steady pace. (It helped that i started in corral 14 in lieu of 4.) I made it through first mile.. felt great. pace was good.. i could talk because i wasn't stressing myself.. so I decided to run 2 miles, walk 2 mins.. worked perfectly.. until around mile 7.5 ish.. My lack of conditioning showed up. so i reverted to my original plan.. but it was more like walk 4 and run 6 mins. i was keeping pace with the 2:30ish group. things started falling apart at mile 8.. I pretty much walk the entire mile.. started running again at mile 9. stuck with my plan... when i walked, I walked as fast as I could.. so i was right at a 15min/mile.. then mixed in jogging. OMG wheres the finish line.. at mile 11..my hat started to irritate me.. i should have worn the visor.. next time for sure.
So I get onto the boardwalk, I can see the finishline. I tried to get it moving.. At the 13 mile mark, I went for it.. Calf were cramping, hip flexors were knotting up, not a good scene.. crossed the line, i was done.
What would you do differently?:

Mentally i think i was at the top.. physically i was in the dumps. when my body was fading.. i mentally pushed hard to finish.. I have to train more.. This was a good mental achievement for me. I have to do it again.. so i can start in my correct corral..

It was a bad run because i was conditioned properly. Many people call me crazy for doing with so little training.. but i tell them... it was a mental victory. years of training and competing prepared me for a day like to day.. I had to do it!!!
Post race
Warm down:

after crossing the line.. the objective was not to sit down.. I was amazed at how many people were sitting down.. i walked very slowly.. took down a gatorade and a banana.. minor stretching.. I then made my way to the sand.. took my shoes and socks off.. did some active stretching.. the tightness and aches started to subside.. walked around in the sand.. then it was time to go..

What limited your ability to perform faster:

lack of training.

Event comments:

great event... the EMS did an awesome job.... people were dropping like flies because of the heat. It was also good to see the community involved with the event.. great experience.. I will for sure run this again.. trained up of course. :)

Way to push through.  I could not have done this race undertrained--even half way through the marathon plan it hurt.  THe heat & humidity were total suxxors.

Wow - I saw the 7h finish time in the summary line and thought something terrible had happened!  Glad it wasn't accurate...

Sounds like you enjoyed the sufferfest, so I'd say that's a great day!

Congrats on pushing yourself along to the finish (your goal!).

lol... logging error.. 7hrs (i put race start time..).... but it felt like eternity.. if it took me 7hrs, it would he been because i gave up and started partying and drinking with the communities that cheered up on.. lol so a stagger to the finish line. lol

I just started doing tris this summer and I have two under my belt, both sprints. Is it reasonable to build up for a Oly in early ‘09, with a HIM in Oct of ‘09

Steady is our walk. Ignoring the pain that is radiating from my feet, I continue to place one foot in front of the other. Again I wonder, “Why am I doing this?”

Having three seasons under my belt I thought I knew what I was doing. That all changed with a few new challenges and a bunch of new friends.

This program should be used for an athlete whose goal is to run a marathon in the 1:30-2:30 range and has a good running base in the past 8-12 weeks.

I will assume you have not run consistently more than 6 miles and have never completed a half-marathon. I believe running your first half-marathon is a big task which requires dedication and work.

After you have established the Ironman goal, the most important factor outside of the training is which race to choose? What is your best sort of course, hilly, rolling, flat?

My training was taking off. I had never felt stronger. I was making bigger strides than I ever had. I was stronger and faster than I had imagined myself ever being.
