Pre-race routine:

This morning had a surprise and woke at 3 AM with no power. Made some oatmeal the old fashioned way (stovetop) and a cup of tea (instead of coffee). Kept calm most of the time beforehand.
Event warmup:

Really just walked into the water and get a little water into my suit.
Swim
  • 24m 50s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 11s / 100 yards
Comments:

It seemed awfully short course - my garmin said on .85 so I'm not sure.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, I was very happy with my swim
Transition 1
  • 04m 45s
Comments:

My garin and chip time didnt jive - but oh well, they wont take my garmin time. lol
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, it seemed to go well.
Bike
  • 3h 33m 22s
  • 56 miles
  • 15.75 mile/hr
Comments:

Actually wasn't bad - 1st lap felt really good (even the 'hill') but I did start to feel it until after 20. Second lap was just focusing on my game plan to the run. During the bike I realized I was ahead of my time and thought " holy shit - I will break 6:30"..... more on that!
What would you do differently?:

Train a lot more on the bike
Transition 2
  • 02m 46s
Comments:

Got off the bike and my legs gave me a surprise! No real issue with transistion
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 2h 57m 20s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 13m 32s  min/mile
Comments:

Ok this is where it gets colorful. I got off the bike and walked to 'run out' and then started. It felt ok, I knew I had to get used to my legs and it would take a little bit, but in about 1000' a charlie horse grab my right thigh - but bad! Stopped me in my tracks. I stretched and walked it off after a few mins (tick tock). Heading to the park gate and 'bam' - my letf quad became rock solid and was spasming. Again I stopped and stretched (tick tock) and walked it off. First aid station had some gator aide & salt pills and I tried one (never used them before). Kept going then my HR kept spiking and thought "what the heck" - I can do a HM in about 2:00 (BTW, that's not after riding 56 miles). So I did what I could and walked ( a lot). This was my first and I originally wanted to finish strong - then I just wanted to finish. With the exception of the 6 more cramps I ended up getting (both to my right hammy and left quad) I never felt I wouldn't finish - just hoped for a better time. I ran when I could and walked when I needed to - watching people run on by my who I passed on the bike a while bike. NOt my best running performance.
What would you do differently?:

More long bricks - and better nutrition plan, obviously!
Post race
Warm down:

Stopped and fought nausea for a bit - then walked with Ali to transition

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I had backed off my training for the past 4-5 weeks because of life issuses

Event comments:

If it wasn't for my run time - I'd have been happier. I was anticipating an 11 min mile and did a 13.27 - big difference.. Bottom line was I just set my personal best - now I have something to beat!

Congratulations on your first Half! Even without the big hill, the bike is challenging. Plus, the run is beautiful, but it can really be a beast. Nice job!

My first triathlon was at age 56. At first I was just the cameraman at my daughter's first triathlon, then I am doing the races that she has done.
