Overcast
Total Time = 3h 01m 32s
Overall Rank = 306/553
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 32/54
Pre-race routine:

We always camp out the night before the race, but Friday night it was pouring. We set up the tents in the pouring rain, and got so soaked that I decided to get a hotel. We checked in at Super 8, changed, went to eat pizza, then to LL Bean and went back to hotel. I got my gear ready and all three of us were in bed reading by 9:30.
Event warmup:

None...I think I stretched out a little bit, but didn't do any real warm up. The water was cold, so I swam out once, swam back and then did it again. I kept looking for the kids but they didn't come down to the race site until after my wave went off.
Swim
  • 35m 12s
  • 1640 yards
  • 02m 09s / 100 yards
Comments:

The swim took me 10 minutest longer this year than it did last year, but I was higher up in my age group than last year. I also felt great during the swim. My feeling is that there was either a strong current or the course wasn't set up correctly.
The results are such that I can see what the whole age group of field did to make a comparison.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Transition 1
  • 02m 18s
Comments:

I felt pretty good about T1...nothing stands out to me
Bike
  • 1h 28m 15s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 16.90 mile/hr
Comments:

I was feeling pretty good and really trying to focus on my cadence...however at about 5-6 miles in, my chain came off and I tried to back pedal to get it back on...while I was looking down, I lost focus and rode off the edge of the road. I banged my knee and was more mentally shaken than anything else. It took me a while to figure out how to get my chain back on and once I got back on my bike my knee was killing me. I almost quit, but talked myself into going one mile...then a few more miles...I went slow for a while and then got on myself for being a wous.
What would you do differently?:

Not try to save 1 minute and cost myself 20 minutes
Transition 2
  • 02m 7s
Comments:

I don't remember anything about T2 except how muddy the path was...at least a few inches of muddy water for about 15 feet.
Run
  • 54m 13s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 08m 44s  min/mile
Comments:

Should/could have run faster....my rank by age group is pretty disappointing.
Post race
Event comments:

This is a well run race. I've done it 4 times and look forward to doing it again next year.

There was a HUGE current. I was there to watch my friend and everyone at the last turn buoy got swept way off course. His Garmin said he swam 1.2 miles. So I would not sweat your swim time. Probably it was the same or better as before. Tough course. Way to gut it out.

My first triathlon was at age 56. At first I was just the cameraman at my daughter's first triathlon, then I am doing the races that she has done.
