Roll Tide!!
Subject: Santa Rosa Island triathlon Canceled :(

This is the email I just received:

The Board of Directors of the Santa Rosa Island Triathlon deeply regrets to inform you that our event is cancelled for this Saturday, October 5th. Being experienced in the vagaries of weather in the Gulf of Mexico and the Gulf Coast area, we waited to see how the tropical disturbance sitting off the Yucatan Peninsula would form up.  Now the winds are up to 65 MPH and it's become Tropical Storm Karen and is  strengthening.  It may turn, weaken or stop, but its very likely that the storm surge and winds, much less probable heavy rains, will render Santa Rosa Island impossible to use for outdoor activity, much less a triathlon with over 1000 bicycles on the road.  We are considering all options, but right now we are quickly alerting/cancelling vendors, service providers, equipment, athletes, vehicles, volunteers and Pensacola Beach facilities.  It's a punch in the gut, but we thank you for your patience and we will get back to you.

I was registered and looking forward to this one too, it's definitely a bummer. The good news is I'm (hopefully) still doing the Destin Seascape tri next Saturday.

That does suck but I'd rather cancel out then get wrapped up in the middle of a storm of that magnitude.

If you're still looking to race, Sugarman should escape the storm and go off as planned. We've already had inquiries from Santa Rosa participants. Probably won't sell out and we do have race day registration.

I'm in Panama City and yes, we're hoping at worst just a wind/rain event; however, that is not good Tri weather and the buoys off shore already indicating significant rough water conditions. Good for surfing, bad for swimming.

SRITRI was supposed to be my A race this year. Pretty bummed about the cancellation. I would do Destin or the Mighty Magnolia (Hattiesburg, Ms) next weekend but I have plans that I can't cancel.

Does anyone know of any other races in the area for next, next weekend (19th/20th)?

My first triathlon was at age 56. At first I was just the cameraman at my daughter's first triathlon, then I am doing the races that she has done.

My first attempt two years ago was not so successful when a deck nail found its way into my foot a week before the race. But I kept plugging away the last couple of years to stay healthy and get back.
