Hampton, Virginia
United States
J&A Racing
70sF / 0C
Sunny
Total Time = 2h 23m 1s
Overall Rank = 1198/2352
Age Group = W40-44
Age Group Rank = 96/208
Pre-race routine:

Drove down to Hampton - ate a Lara Bar and drank a diet Dew along the way. KT taped knees and put on calf sleeves. Picked up race packet and got ID'd for after-race beer.
Event warmup:

Watched the little kid race go off. Otherwise not much.
Run
  • 2h 23m 1s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 10m 55s  min/mile
Comments:

Maybe started off a bit fast; I was hoping to stay with the 2:30 pacer, but I couldn't find him, so I started off on my own. All of a sudden, around 1 mile, I get passed by the 2:15 pacers. Ooops. Felt really good about my running - only stopped to walk through aid stations until the 12th mile - walked up a steep overpass. Another short little bout of walking somewhere before the finish line, but otherwise ran the whole thing.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing - this went well for me. It was hotter than I anticipated, but they had plenty of water & gatorade on the course and I was smart about drinking it. Maybe start off a bit slower, but I'm really happy with my performance.
Post race
Warm down:

Ate the banana and gatorade, dropped off stuff at the car & called home. Went into civic center for post-race feast and had beer and crab/corn chowder. Realized I don't really like crab/corn chowder. Or crappy beer (Coors Light). Got a massage because my calves hurt. And then drove home.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Heat? Mostly I'm on my way back...it has taken a while to get here and I have a ways to go -- but I hit my target time and was even 7 minutes faster. Yeah me!

Event comments:

J&A throws awesome races. Plus the Hampton cops, the Hampton citizens, darn near everyone on the course was awesome. Lots of fantastic cheering sections from random folks along the whole 13 miles - there were no lonely stretches.

I just ran the Boston Marathon under nine minute miles, can I run eight minute miles for my half Ironman training runs? Or should I go slower?

I just started doing tris this summer and I have two under my belt, both sprints. Is it reasonable to build up for a Oly in early ‘09, with a HIM in Oct of ‘09

Steady is our walk. Ignoring the pain that is radiating from my feet, I continue to place one foot in front of the other. Again I wonder, “Why am I doing this?”

Having three seasons under my belt I thought I knew what I was doing. That all changed with a few new challenges and a bunch of new friends.

This program should be used for an athlete whose goal is to run a marathon in the 1:30-2:30 range and has a good running base in the past 8-12 weeks.

I will assume you have not run consistently more than 6 miles and have never completed a half-marathon. I believe running your first half-marathon is a big task which requires dedication and work.

My training was taking off. I had never felt stronger. I was making bigger strides than I ever had. I was stronger and faster than I had imagined myself ever being.
