I was going to say earlier...  love the pics.  Don't have time to study and read them yet, but seeing things like that just get the imagination going and wondering what life was like back then.

Haven't gone through them all, but the first lady's comment about the hardest part of being a beggar was the idleness of the life was also a common thread in Orwell's "Down and Out in Paris and London." Written in 1928, he frequently mentioned the worst part of being a "tramp" was the sheer boredom of it all, and how long the days were.

Fascinating stuff, indeed.

BTW, for anyone in the Chicagoland area or planning to come to Chicago anytime within the next 11 months and you think these are cool, go to The Field Museum (the one next to Soldier Field).  They have a temporary exhibit up about the 1893 Exposition in Chicago.  AND they are partnering with the Architecture Foundation to do tours based on Devil and the White City.

I'm going to see it on Monday and will report back, but it is a great look into what was going on close to that same time period.  Just a heads up for folks.

Very cool….we tend to romanticize the era but the pics show the harshness of it as well.

Thanks for letting us know.  Maybe I'll have to take the kids to that sometime.
