Hey folks,

Has anyone done the Finish Strong Half that FS puts on? If so, what were your impressions?

I was hoping to do the Carolina Half in 2014, but it looks like it is moving to May. A September half works better for my schedule and what not.

Thanks,
Matt

Yep, did it its inaugural year, '12. It was a great, well-run race. 2nd half of the bike is a bit tougher than the first. Run is a 2-loop course using park roads, and one dirt/gravel path, and I even enjoyed that. Nice to see your friends on the course.

I'd recommend it, if it wasn't on my wedding anniversary weekend

Did it in 2012 also and agree with above. I think the swim was quite a bit short which fits my skill set perfectly!

Yes, agreed, it was an awesome race in 2012. I love the events FS puts on in general. I would have done it this year except for injury. Fgump gave a good description of the course. That 2nd half of the bike was a beast, in part because it was, but also because I went too hard the first half. Next time I'll def save something.

Thanks for everyone's thoughts...I think I am in for 2014 for my first half!

One nice thing about the FS Half is the single transition area- to me this is much less stressful than worrying about dividing your stuff into a ton of bags that will be in different places- as happens in the Raleigh Ironman 70.3, which uses the same swim, T1, and part of the same bike course.

Agree with everyone else. The one thing to consider, which has probably already occurred to you, is that this is a very small race with very small crowds. So if you like some noise and energy to keep you going, you might want to look elsewhere. (This is from my 2012 experience but I can't imagine it changed THAT much in 2013). Other than that, good race.

i did this race as my first 70.3 in 2012 (actually pulled out the shirt this past weekend to wear around since the weather has started to cool off). i thought this race was perfect for my first long distance race. nice and small. i did raleigh 70.3 the following spring and if that had been my first half, it would have been way more overwhelming.

id like to do this race again.

Yes, I did notice the participant number is somewhat small, but I am ok with that. With the start line being 45 minutes from my house, combined with the price, this makes a very practical first half!

I ran it the last 2 years and it's a great race. I like the small venue. FS always puts on a good show. It's an excellent pre- B2B full brick ;o)

Will you will finish your next triathlon swim strong, or will you run out of steam before you even start the majority of your race?

I quickly browsed an article in Men's Health that talked about doing a triathlon, and how it wasn't really that hard. With a "tsk!" I quickly turned the page while thinking, "Yeah, right!"

A strong core will allow you to keep optimal body alignment for whatever you’re doing (swim, bike or run), and this in turn will reduce your fatigue in the long run.
