Las Vegas Triathlon
71F / 22C
Sunny
Total Time = 2h 45m 21s
Overall Rank = 56/128
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 10/15
Pre-race routine:

Drove to NM from AZ on Friday night. I was getting tired so I stopped in Gallup and finished driving to my parents house in Los Alamos on Saturday morning. My parents and I took their camper van up to Las Vegas in the afternoon, picked up my packet and then searched for a place to get pasta.
Event warmup:

After setting up transition, swam about 150 meters.
Swim
  • 36m 22s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 25s / 100 meters
Transition 1
  • 02m 19s
Comments:

Felt a little hazy from the swim but still got my suit off in good time but I had trouble with my race number. When I put my shirt on, 2 pins came undone. I tried to quickly repin the pins and move on but one just wouldn't stay pinned. I left with it unpinned hoping it would not drag in the wind.
What would you do differently?:

Take my own pins just incase I get cheap pins like the ones they gave us.
Bike
  • 1h 14m 6s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 20.12 mile/hr
Comments:

The bike was more difficult than I expected it to be. I would actually rival it as almost as hard as the Mountain Man bike was. It was partly due to the headwind that slowed down the ride back down the hill.

I shifted well and rode very well on the uphill climb. Even though my shifting was good, my rear derailler must have come out of adjustment during the transport to the race as there was a little slippage in some of the gears and I could not shift into the lowest gear on the big ring. Also there was some rubbing of the derailler on the wheel cover.

Also my toes felt a little numb near the end of the bike.

What would you do differently?:

More hill training and I should have done a little pre-race ride to check the bike. It rode and shifted perfect on Thursday so I didn't check it. (although I wouldn't know exactly what I need to do to adjust the rear derailler)
Transition 2
  • 01m 3s
Comments:

Had trouble racking my bike. Their racks were different and I tried to rack it with my front wheel (partly because the rack pushed on the derailler which may have caused my shifting problems) and it leaned over so I turned it around and reracked it.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe practice racking the bike a couple of times before a race to find the best way, especially when the rack is different.
Run
  • 51m 33s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 08m 18s  min/mile
Comments:

My toes were still numb for about 2 miles. I tried to wiggle them as I slowly slowly moved along and eventually I got the feeling back. After getting the feeling back, I still could not get my running legs going. I finally got them going at around 4 1/2 miles. I think I ran the last mile in 7 minutes.
What would you do differently?:

Get my legs going sooner... sometimes easier said than done.
Post race
Warm down:

My mom had my dogs and the pulled her over to me. Drank some water and got licked. I also talked with Lobo and ABQkid and ziacyclist. It was neat to bump into some others from BT.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Perhaps the altitude got to me at this race. I did not notice it at the Mountain man, but here I did. The long drive with one dog on my shoulders and one on my lap. I also did not sleep the best in the roof part of my parents camper van. Enough with the excuses.

Event comments:

I only put below average for post race activities because all the bananas were gone when I finished.

Good times on the bike and run.  I didn't realize this was in NM.  Thought it was in NV.  You did awesome...

Awesome job dude!  I'm a firm believer that the more races you do the better you get at them.

As far as the numb toes go...did you switch to a new sock?  I did recently and found the stitching in the toes was causing them to go numb...just a thought.

So what's next?

That elevation will get you. Congrats on the race finish. Hope your overnight in Gallup was alright; you came through on kind of a crazy weekend (Intertribal Ceremonial.)

Good race and report. You had a good run, those couple of climbs got me. It was nice meeting you, and we'll look for you at SOMA.

Nice race, especially when you blew past me with less than a mile to go!  We'll see you at Soma...and you better be right about the beer at the finish line!

Great job! Awesome run

Have you thought about wearing a race belt so that you don't have to mess with the pins for the race number?  I really like mine.

 Thanks for the report!

Nice race and report. Your run time is my goal for a 10K, and your legs were not working! I know what you mean about the bike racks—w ird how it would work one way, but not the other.

I have some Pearl Izumi socks that I use just for races (well since I got a nasty blister in the San Diego International in June). They slip on really well even if your feet are wet.

Thanks! I'll look into getting a pair; anything to get rid of the irritation associated with stubborn socks.

Hey great race! I was thinking about doing this race. I'm glad that you went and raced fast enough to make a strong Phx-area presence there so I didn't have to go. Haha.

Anyway, way to go!

Great job Andy!! Eventhough it sounds like it was not the race you were hoping to have, just remember that you can only be as good as YOU can be on THAT day. Not everyday/every race is going to be record breaking.
Glad you had a good time and were able to see your folks.
