Subject: Niagara Falls Half Now Needs A New Name
The latest news is that for legal reasons, Multisport Canada is changing the name of the Niagara Falls Triathlon. We will need a name to describe the distance of the Niagara Falls Triathlon.

Taking place on September 21, 2014, the Niagara Falls Triathlon consists of a 2K Swim, a 90K Bike and a 21.1K run. The scenic course winds its way through the beautiful Niagara Region, and the run course passes the gorgeous and iconic Niagara Falls twice.

In keeping with our “athlete-focused” race series, rather than coming up with the name ourselves, we have decided to take the opportunity to launch a contest to name the race. We will be giving away a free entry to the race, including two night’s accommodation at the race hotel, to the person who submits the name chosen by our selection committee. The contest will be open until noon on February 21, 2014. The winning name will be announced on Monday February 24, 2014. Please submit your race name suggestions to [email protected].

John - what part of the current name is causing the issues so we know what can't be used.

I believe it is the word 'iron', they are not allowed to use. As per a Facebook post.

John,

I made a submission not knowing the word "iron" was the issue. May I submit another idea?

I wondered how long it would be before WTC went after the use of half iron or half ironman. Is Welland also changing names?

Yes, unfortunately Welland will have to change as well.

We are in the process of trying to contact the winner. They submitted their suggestion on another forum and we need to track them down. Hopefully we will announce the winner and the race name by the weekend.

Just got off the phone with the winner of the name the race contest for Niagara Falls. Dan Lathum of Tennessee will be joining us in September in Niagara Falls. Congratulations Dan! I also want to thank everyone who suggested a name. In the end there were over 200 to choose from.

We think the new name of the race brings into focus that our race is in a tremendous wine growing region and of course the stories of the daredevils of the past who used to go over the Falls in a barrel. We hope you will join us at the Niagara Falls Barrelman!

Don't forget that everyone who enters the race before March 21 will be eligible to win a CompuTrainer. Another of our early bird draw prizes.

Well this is a little embarrassing. Apparently I am mathematically challenged.

In the interest of transparency I will to tell you the back story. We had posted the name the race contest to our website, Facebook and some triathlon forums. We had two suggestions for Barrelman on February 7th. One by email and one on the Slowtwitch Triathlon Forum thread.

Realizing that the time stamp on Slowtwitch was on the west coast I calculated that one entry for Barrelman was submitted from Tennessee at 17:39EST. The actual calculation should have been 23:39EST......Duh!!

The email suggestion for Barrelman came in at 18:52PM and was from Texas, which would have made it, 19:52EST. In other words the Texas suggestion actually came in first.

I had already announced Dan Lathum as the winner when I realized my mistake, later on Friday evening. So in my mind, the only ethical thing to do was award two prizes should the second winner want to redeem and race. I sent the other winner an email on Friday and just got off the phone with him. Warren contacted me this afternoon and will be available to join us at the Niagara Falls Barrelman.

Therefore I want to congratulate both Warren Knoll of Tyler, Texas and Dan Lathum of Tennessee. In the meantime I will work on my math skills.

I just had a couple of problems, I could count the number of triathlons I had contested at zero. Secondly, I could count on one hand the number of times I had been swimming in the last 17 years.

Fall's also the time to shop! In fact, now's the best time to retool some of your triathlon equipment for next year, right before the Christmas season begins to jack prices upward.

This half Ironman plan covers many weeks of challenging, but attainable training for someone who has some endurance experience, and ideally some Olympic distance races within the past season.
