Calgary Police Half Marathon - RunHalf Marathon

Calgary City Police
5C / 41F
Total Time = 1h 29m 48s
Overall Rank = 25/1128
Age Group = M30-39
Age Group Rank = 12/194
Pre-race routine:

2 pop tarts, no coffee this time - didn't want potty issues.

Zoot ultra shorts, compression top with race long shirt and kinvara 2 race shoes.

Event warmup:

Running late as usual, jogged about 500m with some pickups then jumped the fence to be about 10 rows back from start.

  • 1h 29m 48s
  • 21.1 kms
  • 04m 16s  min/km

My new Garmin (Fenix 2) went nuts after about 6K - put me at 20mph and showed that I ran out into the resevoir then ran along the beach. Totally off, never seen a garmin screw up so bad. Had to hard reset it (try holding the light button for 25 seconds while running full speed) and then started a new run activity at the 10km mark.

Post race
Warm down:

Walked it off - remembered to bring 10$ for the post race massage. Seemed to help.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Was sick as a dog coughing etc for the last week so no running at all until Sat (8km recovery). In the middle of the Pfitz 70/18 plan. So can't complain about the results.

Event comments:

This is my benchmark race - first HM I did 6 years ago. Placed somewhere around 550 - have slowly moved down to 300 then 100 then 50 and now 25. Will never win but might creep up a little bit further... :)

My question is am I playing with fire entering the half marathon this close to my primary goal for this season which is the HIM?

I just ran the Boston Marathon under nine minute miles, can I run eight minute miles for my half Ironman training runs? Or should I go slower?

I just started doing tris this summer and I have two under my belt, both sprints. Is it reasonable to build up for a Oly in early ‘09, with a HIM in Oct of ‘09

Steady is our walk. Ignoring the pain that is radiating from my feet, I continue to place one foot in front of the other. Again I wonder, “Why am I doing this?”

Having three seasons under my belt I thought I knew what I was doing. That all changed with a few new challenges and a bunch of new friends.

This program should be used for an athlete whose goal is to run a marathon in the 1:30-2:30 range and has a good running base in the past 8-12 weeks.

I will assume you have not run consistently more than 6 miles and have never completed a half-marathon. I believe running your first half-marathon is a big task which requires dedication and work.

My training was taking off. I had never felt stronger. I was making bigger strides than I ever had. I was stronger and faster than I had imagined myself ever being.
