Pre-race routine:

Up early for the drive to Pensacola Beach. Usual pre race food. Always nice to be able to park right next to transition as it is in a big parking lot right on the Gulf.
Event warmup:

Ran about a mile mixing in some strides. Swam about 200-300 yards. Water was cool.
Swim
  • 03m 51s
  • 300 yards
  • 01m 17s / 100 yards
Comments:

Hard to get a real feel for the quality of the swim given the short length. No chance to get any rhythm...just go hard and try to suck it up.
What would you do differently?:

Despite the short course I still got a little off course on the way to the buoy...so there were seconds to be gained there.
Transition 1
  • 01m 43s
Comments:

This year T1 time started when you came out of the water....then there is the long run through the restaurant, across the street and into T1. Last year T1 times didn't start until right at entry to T1
What would you do differently?:

Ran the whole way to T1 and actual transition seemed average.
Bike
  • 23m 59s
  • 10 miles
  • 25.02 mile/hr
Comments:

Was going to really push this and try to avg 265+ watts for the ride. Through most of the ride I was in that range but faded over the last couple of miles. Felt hard from the beginning and never got a second wind. Ended up with AP258/NP259 which was about the same as last year although I was a little faster this year.
What would you do differently?:

Feel better on the bike. Last two races power/pace has felt hard/hurt. Should be more comfortable with that effort based on training.
Transition 2
  • 00m 41s
Comments:

Decent transition. Coming into the parking lot you kind of snake around to the dismount line.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing....pretty average. Maybe my average needs to be faster.
Run
  • 19m 59s
  • 3 miles
  • 06m 40s  min/mile
Comments:

Wanted to push this. Garmin showed about 3.05 miles. Mile splits were 6:30/6:38/6:32 and 6:00 over the last bit. Was hoping to be more in the 6:30 range. Garmin splits don't add up to 6:40 pace in results but I went hard and had nothing left at the end.

Was passed by the guy that finished 2nd with about a mile to go but couldn't hang with him. But was able to pass the eventual 4th place guy with about 3/4 mile left. So gained one spot and lost one spot on the run.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing....gave it all I had.....maybe my "all" needs to be faster.
Post race
Warm down:

Visited with friends and team members. Went for a cool down run. Packed up the car and walked across the street for the awards/post race festivities.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I think this is my first ever overall podium in a tri so I'm satisfied with the result. These local/short races are a good chance to push your limits and see what you have. Hopefully I can bump up a bit more with my paces through the season.

Event comments:

Second time I have done the race. Nicely done with a good awards party in a beautiful setting. Hopefully, the race can grow and attract more participants. It was fun.

Congrats on the OA podium!  Sounds like a fun race - needs a longer swim though.

If you are slower now then I would have hated to be competing with you when you were faster.

You are an animal. Way to go!

Great race Randy! Agree with the others about the nice run at the end, that's a really fine effort after hammering out a solid bike as well.

I went down to the beach the day before to scout out the course, and it was glorious...the sun was out, the sea was as smooth as glass, and only a hint of a breeze was blowing. “Perfect,” I thought.
