Huntersville, North Carolina
United States
Set Up Events
70F / 21C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 32m 14s
Overall Rank = 86/320
Age Group = M40-44
Age Group Rank = 13/52
Pre-race routine:

Up early, quick shower to wake up. Clif bar and OJ on the drive to the site.

Unload bike, flat rear tire, pump it up and ride to transition area.
Event warmup:

Got set up in transition, picked up chip, got marked, went back to transition. Back tire flat already. Grabbed my spare and took it to Trek guys to replace. Quickly set bike back up and grabbed swim gear and headed to start. No pre-race swim.
Swim
  • 17m 56s
  • 750 meters
  • 02m 23s / 100 meters
Comments:

Swam a great line, no wandering. Started off pretty good, but couldn't hold the pace. A little congestion at bouy.
What would you do differently?:

Gotta swim more.
Transition 1
  • 02m 17s
Comments:

2nd fastest in AG, 32nd overall. Passed 6 in my age group in transition.
What would you do differently?:

Get on bike smoother, but that really affected bike time more than T1 time.
Bike
  • 47m 7s
  • 16.79 miles
  • 21.38 mile/hr
Comments:

Best avg speed to date. Probably could have pushed a bit more. Felt good on bike and like last year, the end came quickly. Passed 6 in AG and got passed by 2.
What would you do differently?:

Go a little harder at the beginning.
Transition 2
  • 01m 35s
Comments:

2nd in AG, 24th overall. Only 4 sec behind AG fastest t2. Passed 3 in AG during transition.
Run
  • 23m 21s
  • 3 miles
  • 07m 47s  min/mile
Comments:

Needed a 21 minute run to break 1:30 but didn't have it in me. Passed 1 in AG and got passed by 1. Ran 7:55, 7:52, 7:37, so I was getting faster.
Post race
Warm down:

Some PT and massage from the people on site. Oranges and bananas and some water.

Event comments:

Would get a 5 rating if they would have more port-a-pottys. Only 6 for over 500 racers.

I have always been an athlete, growing up playing team sports like basketball and soccer. I also ran in a couple of 10K races every year, so I had no reason to worry about running a 5K...right?

After I left the running store, I couldn't stop thinking about the sprint tri and how much of a challenge it would be for me. So instead of joining a gym, I started riding my bike and it felt great.

I couldn’t help but feel that the race had beaten me. Perhaps duathlons were more for me? No, I was more determined than ever to succeed. I was determined to get on top of my swimming.

This life of mine is not so different from yours. It has a multitude of similarities. I suffer from uncertainty, I get nervous at the thought of registering and when getting to the starting line.

I am not going to buy a tri-suit before my first tri - I want to make sure I am going to stick with this before I spend a lot of money on it so I want to figure out what will work best.

I couldn't believe that my splits kept getting lower! I started to run harder after I passed the "5 km" sign and picked a few people that I wanted to pass.
