Fernandina Beach, Florida
United States
DRC Sports
85F / 29C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 27m 51s
Overall Rank = 107/243
Age Group = 50-54
Age Group Rank = 3/6
Pre-race routine:

Got up at 4:00AM to get stuff ready. Packed almost everything last night so could just get it all in the car. ~ hour drive to Fernandina Beach.
Event warmup:

Light jogging & walking. Not too much weightbearing stuff because I didn't want my feet to hurt before I even started.

Did several out-and-backs in the ocean to get used to open water again.
Swim
  • 08m 29s
  • 440 yards
  • 01m 56s / 100 yards
Comments:

Remained careful, but everything was actually pretty smooth. Didn't really get kicked or pushed around except turning the first buoy. Just focused on long, smooth strokes & not burning too much energy. Was even able to bilateral breathe it was so calm!
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Transition 1
  • 01m
Comments:

Was slow and careful getting stuff together to make sure I didn't forget anything.
What would you do differently?:

Just be a little more speedy. Now that I have done it I can go a bit more confidently next time.
Bike
  • 47m 57s
  • 15.8 miles
  • 19.77 mile/hr
Comments:

Made sure heart rate didn't go over 155. I had specific goals relating to the run & want to make sure had enough energy to do it.
There was one 36-year-old woman that I kept leap-frogging with during the ride which helped keep it interesting. She's not in my age group anyway so I don't care (LOL)!
What would you do differently?:

Next time I might be a little more aggressive.
Transition 2
  • 01m 29s
Comments:

Careful movements, made sure the rest of the sand was off my feet before putting on socks.
What would you do differently?:

A bit faster, but was deliberately tentative today.
Run
  • 28m 54s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 09m 19s  min/mile
Comments:

This was my big goal; to be able to jog the whole run segment without having to stop & walk. I had a lot of physical therapy on my feet and legs this year to try to reduce the pain from my R foot joint replacement, L foot plantar fasciitis & L hamstring issues.
What would you do differently?:

Now that I know I can do it maybe I can go a bit stronger next time.
Post race
Warm down:

Went back into the ocean to swim gently & let my muscles relax. Also did some walking & stretching.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Staying conservative for that run goal. Still had some pain after but nothing intolerable.

Event comments:

Could've had more volunteers on the bike course at the intersections where where were roundabouts. Car traffic was not blocked for the race & the cars didn't always know when they were able to go between the bikers.

Diligently checked my heart rate to make sure I didn't go over 155 until the last 3/4 mile since most of the 2nd half was uphill. By the last 1/4-1/2 mile I didn't care how high it went. I just knew I was almost done!
Course: Out and back course. Down the road to Ft. Clinch State Park, which was nice & shady. The park road wound downhill towards the water. Then turnaround took us back up the road & out of the park to the finish line.

I have always been an athlete, growing up playing team sports like basketball and soccer. I also ran in a couple of 10K races every year, so I had no reason to worry about running a 5K...right?

After I left the running store, I couldn't stop thinking about the sprint tri and how much of a challenge it would be for me. So instead of joining a gym, I started riding my bike and it felt great.

I couldn’t help but feel that the race had beaten me. Perhaps duathlons were more for me? No, I was more determined than ever to succeed. I was determined to get on top of my swimming.

This life of mine is not so different from yours. It has a multitude of similarities. I suffer from uncertainty, I get nervous at the thought of registering and when getting to the starting line.

I am not going to buy a tri-suit before my first tri - I want to make sure I am going to stick with this before I spend a lot of money on it so I want to figure out what will work best.
