Pre-race routine:

I have done this race in 2011 and 2012. I was entered in 2013 but I missed the race for my mother-in-laws funeral. I decided to enter the race again in 2014 but I was coming off a week at the beach - I did actually get some bikes and runs in during vacation. But I also ate very well. Got home the night before at 10:20pm.

Got up at 4:30am for the race and jumped on the scale - UMPH. I did enjoy vacation. Ate some breakfast and loaded up. Off by 5:10 for a good 25 to 40 minute drive down. This triathlon has grown and was sold out at 500 entrants. Got onsite at 6am; and did packet pickup, chip, etc, Very smooth time and setup my transition. Just was not feeling it- and realized that this race was going to be interesting. I was feeling ok but had no real mo.

Event warmup:

Hit the pool for a quick swim (had not swum in over a week) and then went for a quick run/activation while the first folks took off. I wetn off at 7:45 and the race started at 7 so I had a good stretch of time to kill.
Swim
  • 05m 10s
  • 300 yards
  • 01m 43s / 100 yards
Comments:

I had a two minute break behind me which meant when I hit the far wall on the 25 yd turns I was able to swim down center. This swim can be a real cluster. The guys in front of me swam well; I was catching the guy in front of me but realized catching him was not going to be worth the effort. Happy with the swim - 25 seconds faster than two years ago.
What would you do differently?:

Given this swim where it is truly luck of the draw as who puts in true times not bad
Transition 1
  • 01m 13s
Comments:

Not sure why this was so slow - I had trouble with the buckle on my helmet - Note to self - loosen helmet strap.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Bike
  • 35m 55s
  • 12.7 miles
  • 21.22 mile/hr
Comments:

Much slower than 2012 - over a minute - no one passed me and I was riding hard but I could have gone harder for sure.

I did have an issue - on Old Ardrey Kell I was passed by card flying. Then they stooped in front of me as we came upon some really slow riders. It was so frustrating and they really slowed me up - lost all kinds of momentum
What would you do differently?:

Go harder? no one to race against and passed everyone in front of me. So not sure
Transition 2
  • 00m 49s
Comments:

It was a very good T2
Run
  • 25m 34s
  • 5 kms
  • 05m 07s  min/km
Comments:

Got passed by a guy from the bike withing the first half mile and then passed everyone else. I was glad fro the time (over a minute faster than 2012).

Funny story - I like to sump water over my head when I run in the triathlons. So at the first water stop - and at the second I dumped what was water on my head - it was Heed = nasty
What would you do differently?:

I was happy
Post race
Warm down:

Grabbed some water - and walked around. This has a really big turnout from vendors. Looked at my garmin and waited for results. Did a 5 minute massage (horrible). Showered and packed up. I did talk to a few friends as well.

This was a huge triathlon and I was amazed to see the last person get out of the water as I was changing.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

This race was done as a redemption from last year. But it was clearly not an A race. It was in 2012. Interesting to PR by a few seconds in a race that was me just racing.

Event comments:

Great beginner race and post-race experience. Jones did an incredible job.

I have always been an athlete, growing up playing team sports like basketball and soccer. I also ran in a couple of 10K races every year, so I had no reason to worry about running a 5K...right?

After I left the running store, I couldn't stop thinking about the sprint tri and how much of a challenge it would be for me. So instead of joining a gym, I started riding my bike and it felt great.

I couldn’t help but feel that the race had beaten me. Perhaps duathlons were more for me? No, I was more determined than ever to succeed. I was determined to get on top of my swimming.

This life of mine is not so different from yours. It has a multitude of similarities. I suffer from uncertainty, I get nervous at the thought of registering and when getting to the starting line.

I am not going to buy a tri-suit before my first tri - I want to make sure I am going to stick with this before I spend a lot of money on it so I want to figure out what will work best.

I couldn't believe that my splits kept getting lower! I started to run harder after I passed the "5 km" sign and picked a few people that I wanted to pass.
