I'm looking for recommendations on a maintenance stand for my bike. Doing work on it leaning up against the wall or flipped over is getting old. I see a range of them from as cheap as $35 up to $500. So any suggestions would be helpful. I'd prefer to keep it on the cheap side if possible.

I took the cheapest route and rigged up the bike rack that's meant for the back of my car, and suspended it from the wall in my basement. I can hang my bike on it and let the pedals spin freely without obstruction

I'd be down for that but my house doesn't have a basement. I don't have a garage either. Actually, I don't even have a first floor...

I currently have all my tri stuff in our spare room and I wanted to rig something like that but they used metal studs in the construction of the inner walls of the house, so no dice.

Just bought this one a month or so ago.

Works great, holds well my TT bike, my roadie and my kids mountain bikes etc. So much easier now to work on. Lightweight and stores easily out of the way.

I have something like: http://www.amazon.com/Venzo-Mechanic-Bicycle-Repair-Stand/dp/B00D9B7OKQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1428686530&sr=8-1&keywords=bike+repair+stand and it's pretty good.  It could be heavier and more stable, but it's very useable and solid.  I'm just grumpy that it gets tippy when I try to stand my TT bike up vertically so I can adjust the direct mount brake under the bottom bracket.

If I ever build a shed to store my garage junk (like the patio set, the grill, the lawn mower . . . all the stuff that has no business being in my garage), I would probably buy something like http://www.amazon.com/Conquer-Bench-Mount-Bicycle-Repair/dp/B00KHW8A2Q/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1428686530&sr=8-10&keywords=bike+repair+stand and then mount it to the top of a rolling cabinet toolbox.  That way I'd have a handy place to put stuff, and the box should be heavy enough to counterweight the bike in pretty much any position.

Love my Park Tool bike stand and not to bad on the budget.

Just google "Park Tool bike Stand" and you will see adds for about $139.

Doesn't take up a lot space and works good. My stand folds up and stays in a corner of my garage.

with an extra 20% off deal they had going I saw this one go for about $115, but the wife still won't let me get one so I can't comment on how good it is.

I've got this stand.  I really like it because I can easily swap between both my road and tri bike without having to worry about a seat post clamp.  It folds up nicely and easy to swivel the bike around or adjust the height on the fly.

My favourite stands are like the pros use - hold the bottom brack and front fork. However, I have one with a seatpost clamp that works for my bikes. The biggest recommendation I would have is to get a foldable one; then you can take it with you if you want and when it's not in use (most of the time) it's not taking up much space.

I just bought a park tool pcs-10. I debated getting something cheaper (and here in Aus there's seems to be a small selection), but opted with my hard learned advice of, you get what you pay for. It only arrived last week, but it's had one trial and looks the goods. Folds up pretty nicely as well!

I picked up the Park Tool PRS 20. Like Shane said, bottom bracket & front fork without worrying about clamping on the frame.

I made this one out of galvanized steel pipe and it works great! It cost me ~$45 and was a fun project to DIY.
