Overall Rank = 44/237
Age Group = M35-39
Age Group Rank = 4/40
Pre-race routine:

Up at 5:45, shower then ate some yogurt. Piled into the car with the wife, kids, and gear and toting a "Go Daddy Go" sign and a stuffed kitty (Emma's stuffed kitty told her that it would like to be in the transition area with me)
Event warmup:

Ran about a half mile of the run course to get the legs moving. Then spent about 10 mins in the pool trying to get my stroke right. (was very nervous about the swim)
Swim
  • 08m 4s
  • 547 yards
  • 01m 29s / 100 yards
Comments:

With work shuttling me to a cheap hotel, I've lost my ability to swim while I'm travelling. So, I've been really nervous about my swim. Plus, I put down a pretty aggressive time 1:20/100m when I signed up so I was seeded really early. I was 14th to go off out of 400 some. At times, I was gasping for breath, my turns were pretty rough, and I swear I was swimming tarzan style for about 5 strokes.

Imagine my surprise when I'm ranked 1 in my AG and 6th overall. Holy schmoley.

As I type this, I can barely raise my left arm its so sore. I think I just muscled through it. Passed about 3-4 people. Got passed by 3 people (I think).
Transition 1

Comments:

It felt faster than this. 6th fastest in AG, 49th overall

Comments:

I'm usually a middle of the pack sort of biker. For some reason, this bike ride felt so good. I didn't exactly hammer it the whole way - I wanted to save my legs for the run. But, for the first time in a very very long time, I felt good going up the hills. Kept the cadence up, shifted pretty well.

The 10 sec start intervals kept everything pretty well spread out. The mad rush of incredible bikers that fly by me about 8 mins into the bike never happened. I really had a GREAT bike. Was it the Duke ride that helped with the hills?
What would you do differently?:

More time in the saddle.
Transition 2
  • 00m 35s
Comments:

Great T2. I'm pretty strong with this dismount now and feel comfortable riding barefoot on one pedal. 3rd fastest in AG, 19th fastest overall. Got a little confused where the run start was, which cost me a little bit of time.
Run
  • 23m 55s

Comments:

Another time that I'm pretty satisfied with. Didn't do a whole lot of passing, but didn't get passed that much either. It was getting very HOT! I was glad for some of the miserable lunchtime runs I've been doing because I felt good in the heat.

Coolest part of the run was a little dude close to the first water station. He was about 3-4 years old, but the way he talked he sounded like he was 18. "Ice cold water straight ahead", he'd say. "You're looking really solid". I low fived him twice and told him what an excellent job he was doing.

Was that a mid 7/mile 5k I ran. Sweet Jesus you answered my prayers. I got passed pretty early into the 5k by a buffed out 20 something that I kept within eye sight the entire time. After the race, I thanked him for being such a good rabbit. LOL.

2 of my 4 family cheering section finished the race with me. Emma held my hand when we crossed. Great finish!
What would you do differently?:

My run is finally starting to come together!!!! Hope to get the pacing down and the mileage up over the next couple of weeks.
Post race
Warm down:

Give out sweaty hugs and kisses. Didn't stay long - packed up the stuff and headed out. Came home, mowed the grass and then vegged.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Just need to keep stepping it up each race.

Event comments:

As usual Setup Inc puts on a fantastic race. I suppose we are spoiled here in the Carolinas.

Great race Jeff. I knew you were going to crush the swim; you are such a natural swimmer. And congrats on the bike ride. I know its been a tough year for you to get time in the saddle, so this is wonderful news. And way to bring it home on the run in the heat! Hope to see you at Pinehurst.

Awesome race! You are so smokin' fast! I definitely think the kitty deserves a place on the bike - maybe in the back pocket of your jersey, or even better velcroed onto your handlebars or aero bars so you can stare at her the entire time!
