Overall Rank = 271/400ish
Age Group = Athena U40
Age Group Rank = 5/6
Pre-race routine:

up. breakfast. poop. dress. out.
Event warmup:

Walk to race site from cottage. swim in the lake with Renee. Look at fishies. Look at fat guy in speedo (who was fast.)
Swim
  • 34m 44s
  • 1640 yards
  • 02m 07s / 100 yards
Comments:

nice lake swim. Flat, no current. Got just a little off course once. It was interesting- I found this girl and we matched each other stroke for stroke for stroke for the longest time (felt like) till we hit traffic and were able to break away. Then after traffic again, I got stuck in a sandwich- girl on each side and again we matched each other stroke for stroke for stroke till we could break away. wow. IT was motivation to keep swimmin'! Shoulder felt good, no pain. Sharp turn at the end.
Transition 1
  • 02m 54s
Comments:

I was tired when I came out and half ran, half walked. I need to learn to push it till I get on my bike and catch my breath there.
What would you do differently?:

RUN.
Bike
  • 1h 31m 7s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 16.36 mile/hr
Comments:

two loops. This was.... hell. When we rode it it seemed like a nice little flat course. But that's being goofy at 12mph and looking at stuff. It was horrible. The hills were fake- you didn't know they were hills till you hit them at 18mph. WTF? It was a huge loooong steady incline. I went from a low of 11 to a high of 27 and averaged 16. After the first loop I told myself to get as much speed as I can on down and get momentum for up. Sorta worked. but I hated the second loop so much I wanted to quit and cry. Didn't help that I hit a hole and my aerobars and bike drops dropped an inch so I was uncomfortable for the rest of the ride. Then my whole right side fell numb-butt,let,calf,foot.
What would you do differently?:

find hills to train on and learn proper gearing for hills. I was messing with them too much trying to find a good up-incline-going-spinning-gear.
Transition 2
  • 01m 35s
Comments:

I only got one foot out of the shoes on the bike. I need to adjust the yanks- my feet seem to swell up after the bike.
Run
  • 1h 21m 24s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 13m 07s  min/mile
Comments:

ugh. ugh. My right leg was all numb from the bike, and the bottom of my foot was like running on a pointy wedge. It hurt so bad I wondered if I had a stress fracture. It hurt more to walk so I tried to keep running. Maybe I need more shoes- I have over 170 miles on those shoes. Plus my feet were swelled and the laces were tight and uncomfy. Saw Jeff out there who wasn't happy either. Lots of volunteers with sponges and water.
What would you do differently?:

RUN. buy new shoes.
Post race
Warm down:

pant. pant. breathe. Fresh water shower tent. ahhh!! Food.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I'm a sucky runner.

Event comments:

This was a lot of fun. For next year: Stay on base for supper, it's desolated from civilization. There was no massage tent. :( Bring more blankets- I was cold. And learn to ride hills and run better. Like Jeff says, we will get our revenge on this course!!!
It was a GREAT road trip with Renee. We had a great time talking on the way up and listening to her iPod on the way back. Dinner with Kendall, the missus and miss. Even two bad tires couldn't damper our spirits. And oh yeah we will bring a big map. :)
This was my first actual tri-trip out with no hubby, no kids. I missed them but we had tons of fun!!!

First of all, thanks for being such a GREAT roadtrip buddy. This morning I feel so rested and relaxed - it's like I've been on vacation for a week. What a great getaway.

I think you did great! It was HOT and a much tougher course than anything we get here in the flatlands. You met adversity and persevered. Congratulations on your race, Christine! Oh yeah - standing on the dock I was able to spot you and watch you come in and around the dock on the swim. It was SO COOL! Too bad I screwed up the photo!

I'm thinking about booking a long weekend there later in the year (when it's COOLER) and making it a fun training weekend. Whadya think?

Great job!!  I did this last year and my friend from college did it too.  She'll be racing IM MOO with/against me in 2 weeks.

And I thought last year's hat was cool.  I've got to go down there again just for the swag!!

wow. what a race! the tough ones teach us so much. did you just start using your speed laces? i had to stop because they were making my feet numb, even if i adjusted them (and then it felt like the shoes were loose...and my feet were STILL numb). ended up with some major pain in the ball of both feet. anyway, might be the laces, or the shoes, or the combination.

Christine, you had a great race! The competitors who show up for a small club race like this are totally different from a more "mass market appeal" race like St. Anthony's. You've joined the hard core.

It was great seeing you again and having dinner; hope to see you at many more and we'll plan a better pre-race BT meeting next year!

The pictures are cool too..

Nice race!

Sounds like it was a tough go with some bike issues that effected your run but you pushed through and will be mentally tougher because of it!

I used to use Yanks but stopped as I felt my foot moved around and ended up bruising my toes especially in Int'l distances. If I saved 30 seconds in T2 but killed feet I figure I was better off not using them.

Weird traveling to a tri without your family...I've done it a few times and find that it is easier to focus with less people. Emily is my bud and she always comes but is super supportive and helps me a lot.

What races do you have coming up next?

Well at least I'm not the only one who's a$$ got kicked this weekend!!  You did great, running thru the pain and finishing strong.  Sorry I didn't see you after the race, I had to jet.  But next year we're gonna kick the course's a$$, not the other way around!!

Good for you! Sounds like you enjoyed yourself- AND had a good race despite the hills- and nothing like a solo road trip with good tunes & a good bud for pre race psych and post race glow...Congrats
