Milford, Connecticut
United States
Central Connecticut Coast YMCA
75F / 24C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 22m 58s
Overall Rank = 42/134
Age Group = M4044
Age Group Rank = 9/13
Pre-race routine:

Get to venue. Panic when I realized that I actually forgot to sign up for the race. Breathe sigh of relief when reg was still open and I had money.
Event warmup:

None at all.
Swim
  • 17m 36s
  • 880 yards
  • 02m / 100 yards
Comments:

Pretty decent showing, I guess. First saltwater swim of the year, a little chop occasionally interfered with sighting, but I don't think it really affected performance.
What would you do differently?:

Probably nothing. If I'd gotten to the venue a lot earlier, I could have gotten a decent swim warmup, but it probably wouldn't have really affected performance.
Transition 1
  • 00m 58s
Bike
  • 34m 14s
  • 11.5 miles
  • 20.16 mile/hr
Comments:

Biking felt kind of tough, like it was hard to push. Objectively, I thought I was going slow, but I did pass a lot of people without getting passed again. I don't know if I could have done any better given conditions, training, etc.
Transition 2
  • 00m 33s
Run
  • 29m 37s
  • 3 miles
  • 09m 52s  min/mile
Comments:

Nothing much to report. I was surprised at how quickly mile 1 seemed to hit, and I felt lousy at that point, but my pace wasn't that far off.
Post race
Warm down:

Walk around a bit, take a slow 2 mile jog with another athlete (Kathleen Scotti), eat and drink some more. Then go out for an additional 3 mi run just because it was such a perfect day.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Run conditioning.

Event comments:

Well-organized, very nice course, great staff, great volunteers, just all-around a great race and one I'll be doing again.

I have always been an athlete, growing up playing team sports like basketball and soccer. I also ran in a couple of 10K races every year, so I had no reason to worry about running a 5K...right?

After I left the running store, I couldn't stop thinking about the sprint tri and how much of a challenge it would be for me. So instead of joining a gym, I started riding my bike and it felt great.

I couldn’t help but feel that the race had beaten me. Perhaps duathlons were more for me? No, I was more determined than ever to succeed. I was determined to get on top of my swimming.

This life of mine is not so different from yours. It has a multitude of similarities. I suffer from uncertainty, I get nervous at the thought of registering and when getting to the starting line.

I am not going to buy a tri-suit before my first tri - I want to make sure I am going to stick with this before I spend a lot of money on it so I want to figure out what will work best.
