1502 Katy, Texas | Subject: Guess my VO2 Max I'm getting my VO2 Max tested tomorrow (came free when joining lifetime fitness). So why not turn it into a game. Some background that might help: most recent 5k a couple of months ago: 19:40 most recent tri was a HIM a couple of weeks ago: 4:55 According to my Garmin 920xt it is 54. According to online calculators it is anywhere from 50-55. Winner gets....I don't know....bragging rights? It's the off season, so at least we can all compete at something. |

He should note the protocol, ie how many minutes between steps, size of the step increment. Incline of the treadmill as well Hopefully they are taking blood as well. 3mar, try and get as much of the data as you can. There is sometimes very useful info in there. |

I'll know more after the test. I weigh about 158. I'm a hair under 6' and I'm a virgo. |

If you were doing this on a bike I would have guessed you at about 48- 50, because your not well trained on the bike and I have seen runners not get high VO2 max measurements when done on the bike. since your doing it on a treadmill, I'm going to say 56. make sure someone is there to catch you when you collapse Edited by mike761 2015-11-12 8:22 AM |

It's different but as "enjoyable". You will probably hit pretty close to maxHR. You normally do this until complete exhaustion so on a treadmill you don't want to be launched off the back. |

Elite 3683 Whispering Pines, North Carolina | Subject: RE: Guess my VO2 Max other than a cool number to talk about around a water cooler, isn't VO2 max a fairly useless number? VO2 max is just a measure of maximal oxygen uptake and weight, right? wouldn't LT, VDOT, or some other measure of running fitness be more beneficial? |

As far as usefullness; I wasn't planning on really using it for anything. I do all my running on feal anyway. I'm still pretty new to the sport, so I'm continually learning what all the metrics are. I'll have to look up what LT and VDOT are. |

During a VO2max test they can extract other information. If properly done you get your VO2max, your LT, running economy and fuel utilization at various paces. A Vo2max test is far from being necessary but it does provide useful information Edited by marcag 2015-11-12 9:53 AM |

I did a treadmill test in 2012 when my 5K PB was 19:36 and I got a 50, so I'm going to go with that. A heads up to ask how they stop the test. I've done two and for the first test I had to tap out when I hit my limit. The 2nd test stopped automatically when my HR hit a certain predetermined level but I was 9 points lower than the first test (despite being in better running shape).

1502 Katy, Texas | Subject: RE: Guess my VO2 Max ...and the winner is....drumroll please..... a tie between marcag and dmiller, with LB in second assuming we don't do price is right rules. My result was 59.7. I didn't get the name of the testing equipment they had. Everything was branded with the gym name. I'm sure I could look it up. The gym is Lifetime Fitness. The test itself included a 15 minute warmup where they started me off slow and increased speed every two minutes to what would be about zone 3/4 based on the questions they asked me. Then I had a 5 minute break. The second test started a bit faster, and increased every two minutes and continued until failure. I made it to about 21 minutes at which point I was running at 10 mph (they didn't increase it after that) at a 1% incline. I maintained that about 4 or 5 minutes before stopping. The mask REALLY bothered me. I didn't like it at all. I felt like my breathing was really restricted and felt clostrophobic. I wasn't a fan at all. |

It is exactly where the math of a "normal" person would put it. It says a lot for your potential to KQ (in a positive way) Edited by marcag 2015-11-12 5:12 PM |
