Sunny
Total Time = 35m 15s

Age Group Rank = 1/
Event warmup:

Ran the 1 mi Fun Run with my 7 year old son Courage. He came in 4th OA and really cranked it up in the last mile. After the Fun Run, I did some dynamic stretching to loosen up a bit more.
Run

Comments:

Lined up near the front and off to the left to avoid the sprinters and other runners that go out too hard in the first 100 meters. Began the run and after the first quarter mile found myself in front, with no one challenging for the lead.

Ran the first 5K a tad over 17 minutes. I felt good and was hoping to keep that pace going for the second half. I didn't realize that after the first 5K, the onslaught of hills would begin. Pinehurst is hilly and I don't know why I thought I wouldn't run into any hills for this race.

Caught the 5K runners around mile 5, which began 15 minutes after the 10K. I used them as rabbits and as a mental boost to keep running strong. I passed a group of high schoolers, then saw the 5K 2 OA and ran to catch up. This kid was strong, though, and I did not manage to bridge the gap.

Crossed the line in 35:15, a new 10K PR, and 1st OA. Also, defended my 2011 10K title successfully! Not bad for an old d00d. ;)
What would you do differently?:

Run the first mile easier to save it for the later miles.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around, stretched, hung out with my fam, and raced my 7 year old. He's getting FAST and is always asking me race him. Should I let him get ahead, he can hold a fast sprint and it's very hard to catch him.

Hung out with a few Sandspurs and Warriors, waiting for awards. During award ceremony, I got a gym bag and a coupon for a Thanksgiving Turkey. W00T!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Maybe went out too fast in the first mile.

Event comments:

Nice low key race that caters to families. Bounce houses, pizza and food, good music, and a few booths.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve had weight issues. I remember standing on the scale as a child weighing 60 pounds and feeling fat. My family dealt with stress by eating.
