Pre-race routine:

Got up early as the kids were awake and realised that maybe doing the gardening the day before wasn't the best idea as my hamstrings were hurting, thought I would chill out for a bit but the wife had different ideas so did a load of chores and tried to keep the kids from killing each other. Eat some porridge, banana and flapjack bar. Set off to the race venue three hours before start and parked up, walked down to registration and looked around rather nervously as hadn't a clue what I was supposed to be doing. Strolled back to car and got changed then headed back to get set up. I very helpful guy helped me work out how to put my race numbers on and then met him again as he was racked next to me in the transition which was great as he talked through setting up and gave some good advice. Strolled over to the pool area ready for the briefing and was now feeling really nervous as everybody seemed to be very experienced in my wave!
Swim
  • 07m 21s
  • 400 meters
  • 01m 50s / 100 meters
Comments:

Started of second in the wave in my lane out of four and lapped everybody, got slowed down for a bit as got stuck behind one guy for a couple of lengths as he wouldn't move over but still came out the water first in the wave so couldn't ask for more!
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Transition 1
  • 01m 30s
Comments:

pretty happy with my first ever transition only small mistake was turned down the rack before mine but realised after a couple of metres. getting bikes shoes, helmet and belt when well.
Bike
  • 54m 47s
  • 23.8 kms
  • 26.07 km/hr
Comments:

The bike section was the hardest for me but as I have been only riding the bike properly for three months what did I expect, it was certainly annoying to have the guys in my wave come flying past me. I tried to keep pushing the whole way at a pace I knew I could then run off at the end and this worked but need to work on this still and push my fitness up. Overall was pretty happy with it and couldn't have gone any faster without killing myself for the run. The route was good and very well marshalled, one nasty climb for me that made the legs really burn but it was loads of fun and was very happy to see the end of the route.
What would you do differently?:

Train harder!
Transition 2
  • 01m 32s
Comments:

wow legs were like jelly when I got off the bike and attempted to run with the bike. changed in to shoes and racking the bike went well, had a energy gel and ran off, got shouted at by a marshal for not pulling my number to the front.
Run
  • 36m
  • 6.7 kms
  • 05m 22s  min/km
Comments:

first 2k was hard work as had to force the legs to run and the pedestrian bridge over the main road at 1k was a killer as the steps were at a strange distance so couldn't get a rhythm. After that it was ok and was keeping to the pace I wanted. Got a stich at 4k which was really annoying but just pushed through with it. Got really confused when a marshal told me I had 2k to go but my watch said just over a 1k put carried on pushing. The relief when I came round the corner to see the finishing line was great and sprinted to the finishing line!
What would you do differently?:

nothing as was very happy with the run!
Post race
Warm down:

drank a bottle of water, got my medal and then grabbed my stuff from transition and walked back to the car, drank a shake and the drove home and cracked a few beers and started up the BBQ!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

lack of bike fitness but as only been training since Xmas what did I expect! definitely motivating to train harder and get quicker!

Event comments:

great race and really enjoyed it

Yay, your first triathlon is in the books!  Congratulations!

Sounds like you did great on the swim and the run and the bike wasn't too shabby, either.  How fortunate you were able to find someone to help you set up and get some of the nerves shaken out, kudos to your rack mate for taking the time to give a few tips.

So when's the next race?

Thanks Melanie

Just booked one for the 31st July which will be another sprint and another for 25th September which will be Olympic distance. This gives me some time to try and get some improvement on the bike!

Glad you enjoyed it!

Funny how doing something not necessarily hard, but just different (gardening) can make you sore...

So, after the "gateway tri," are you hooked???

I am definitely hooked as it was so much fun! What I find great about the sport is that everybody is so friendly and encouraging which is so refreshing in modern life when everybody is usually so busy!
