Pre-race routine:

I only got 3 hours sleep due to anticipation!! Breakfast was oatmeal and plenty of it...mmmmmm....then a protein/energy bar all eaten 2.5 hours before expected start time.
Event warmup:

I abandoned my car about 3.5 miles from the race site because of traffic congestion and my worries about my start time. I figured the race organizers would adjust the start but I didn't know how much and I was in one of the earlier waves. So...I dumped my car under the expressway overpass and grabbed my gear and rode in!
Swim
  • 18m 51s
  • 750 meters
  • 02m 31s / 100 meters
Comments:

I really made sure that I got my self acclimated to the water as much as I could before my wave started. We waited in water about mid-thigh level for me for 4 minutes after the previous wave and I took that time to literally lay down in the water, pull the neck of my wetsuit out and fill it with nice cold water (!), get my head and face in the water several times. I think this really helped because I didn't have trouble breathing or panicking when I did start (and I had some trouble in the 2 open water swim practices I did).

What would you do differently?:

I would start at one of the sides, I was too much in the middle of the pack (too much socializing while waiting and not giving any thought as to where I was within the group).
Transition 1
  • 05m 3s
Comments:

I thought it went fine, really but the transition area was huge and I was very far from both the bike start and the run start so....
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Bike
  • 46m 8s
  • 12.4 miles
  • 16.17 mile/hr
Comments:

The ride was hillier than I normally ride but it turned out OK. I let it rip and hit 33 mph on one of the downhills - can I have a PR for downhill speed? If I can, then I do!!
What would you do differently?:

Learn to drink on the bike or bring a camelback. I saw people with those and thought it was a smart idea for someone like me with limited skills in the "drinking while biking" arena.
Transition 2
  • 03m 10s
Comments:

Transition felt fine - just large transition area as already mentioned.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Run
  • 33m 58s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 10m 58s  min/mile
Comments:

I am just not a runner but I did OK for me. I wonder if not drinking much on the bike was a problem but I don't really know. I think running is just hard for me.
What would you do differently?:

I would check out the running course ahead of time like I did for the bike course. During the race, I keep looking ahead to see if there was a mile marker or water station or the turn-around, never knowing when/where they might be.
Post race
Warm down:

Got a massage!!! That was cool - I didn't know I would be getting a medal or a massage and I loved them both!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My running disability.

Event comments:

I don't have anything to compare it to but it was a great race for me! If I want to improve I will have to figure out something about running but I knew that was my weakness to start with! It was such a huge race and that brings complications but it also was a friendly, less competitive atmosphere to be in for a first tri. :)

Awesome race Michele!  You did really well!  Abandoned your car at the underpass, hmmm....this is sounding really familiar to me......I kinda did the same thing!

33mph, nice!

Great job - especially on the bike!!!

I'm totally with you on the "limited drinking while biking skills" area I LOVE my camelback - you should get one!

Great job! Good idea getting used to the water beforehand. And I can totally relate on the running thing, so great job staying with it!
