Tri state triathlons
88F / 31C
Sunny
Total Time = 2h 45m 4s
Overall Rank = 18/50
Age Group = 50-54
Age Group Rank = 1/3
Pre-race routine:

Race day registration. Set up transition. Talk with friends
Event warmup:

No warm ups
Swim
  • 40m
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 40s / 100 meters
Comments:

It was an all male wave, so rather than banged up at start I hung back and just tried to keep a relaxed pace. Treated like a workout swim. Only got off line once, so sighting was better.
What would you do differently?:

Was too relaxed and so my swim time suffered. Came out of the swim in a comfortable state. Probably too comfortable.
Transition 1
  • 01m 18s
Comments:

Short run to transition so everyone should have had good Transition times
What would you do differently?:

I put on socks in T1. That usually costs me about 20 seconds every race, but my feet appreciate it.
Bike
  • 1h 03m 13s
  • 23.32 miles
  • 22.13 mile/hr
Comments:

As usual, I rocked the bike. I had to given how poor I was with swim. It was a really hot and humid day and so I knew I would need to put in a hard ride to be competitive.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. First couple miles got caught behind a slow moving truck with a big trailer and so tried to use that time for fueling. Just some bad luck there, may have cost me about 30-60 seconds.
Transition 2
  • 01m 3s
Comments:

Uneventful and typical T2 time for me
What would you do differently?:

Not much
Run
  • 59m 32s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 09m 36s  min/mile
Comments:

See course description
What would you do differently?:

I did not try to push myself on this run. I passed my age group leader in first mile and so I suppose I was just in maintenance mode after that. I probably could have shaved 5-6 minutes by not walking the hills, but had I done that, who knows with the heat. I just wanted to finish the race without getting heat stroke.
Post race
Warm down:

Found the shaded tent and downed a couple of Gatorades.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Weather. No doubt about it on the run. On the swim, taking too relaxed of an approach. Combined, those two factors cost me about 10 minutes in this race.

Event comments:

Derek does a nice job for basically running an event without much staff. It's Your Race is awesome in that results are immediately available online. Photos are poor for this race. A photographer at the race would be a nice improvement as would better race bling....no medals for winning or completing the race. Except for the run, which is brutal, the lake is nice and clean and bike course roads are nice and without potholes.

Course: Really up and down run course. Not flat at all. With heat and humidity as bad as they were, this set up was grueling. Made first 2 miles without any walking, but that changed dramatically the rest of the race. Walked every hill and these were big hills and long hills. I passed a couple of people, but only 1 person passed me. This was my slowest 10k time of my life, 5 minutes slower than previous 10k time at Muncie Olympic. But to be fair, this course and severe heat made it harder.

My first triathlon was at age 56. At first I was just the cameraman at my daughter's first triathlon, then I am doing the races that she has done.

The triathlon made a lot of sense as I could fit the training around early mornings and other times that wouldn't eat too much into my family time. Things never go completely to plan do they?

Both the Lake Triathlon Shoe CX210TRI and the Lake Road Shoe CX225 offer distinct advantages. I tested both shoes and found them to be extremely comfortable, good looking and durable.
