Total Time = 5h 49m
Overall Rank = 93/100
Age Group = 45-49
Age Group Rank = 4/4
Pre-race routine:

Lake Tahoe is chilly in the morning! Got to transition earlier than I expected. Got everything set up by 6:15am, the race didn't start until 8am. My daughter and I went back to my Jeep and just kind of hung out.
Event warmup:

Wanted to get used to the water/adjust goggles, etc. so did a little bit of swimming.
Swim
  • 42m 29s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 50s / 100 meters
Comments:

Ok,I know I am a slow swimmer, but this does not accurately reflect total time swimming. I exited the water at 37 minutes. T1 was about 3/4 of a mile away--that jog time is included in the swim time. But yeah, still slow.
Side note...when I did the beach run between laps I yelled to my daugher "that was so fun I'm going to do that again!" I guess an elderly gentlemen heard me and laughed and laughed and thought that was the funniest thing. Made me smile to know I unknowingly made someone laugh.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing! Swam my usual calm, cool, slow swim.
Transition 1
  • 03m 43s
Comments:

A little slow I guess, but whatev.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Bike
  • 3h 33m 8s
  • 22 miles
  • 6.19 mile/hr
Comments:

Ummm...yeah. I'm glad I did a bunch of mountain biking in the desert this summer--lots of sand there too. I'm a good--albeit slow--climber. I just don't get how those racers actually 'race' those climbs! There were a few spots I had to get off and push--either due to getting stuck in sand, or just too steep to actually move forward and stay upright! The Flume Trail was the highlight of the course--absolutely breathtaking views--the only problem I was too scared to look too long! The left side was mountain, the right side was drop offs--but out in front was Lake Tahoe and so much beauty to take in. It was awesome. The loop around Marlette Lake was amazing too--until the climbing started again! The downhill was a bit above my pay grade--had to walk some sections to stay alive. But, the last few miles were fast and fun--a little bit of fishtailing here and there due to that darn sand.
What would you do differently?:

Honestly I'm not sure. I guess work on climbing faster or with more power. As for the downhill stuff, only technical practice will help that, I'm a bit of a wuss with that.
Transition 2
  • 03m 16s
Comments:

Again, could probably move faster. My legs were trashed and my fingers were in a permanent clench from surviving the bike!
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 1h 27m
  • 6 miles
  • 14m 30s  min/mile
Comments:

The race director described the course as relatively flat--he should have used air quotes around the word relatively. It felt like a lot of ups and downs. I would call this more of a suggested run--I walked quite a bit of it. The mind was willing, my legs just weren't. When I saw my time I was surprised it was this slow, I FELT like I was walking (almost jogging at times!) fast but apparently I was on a nature stroll.
What would you do differently?:

More brick workouts perhaps? More hill running for strength?
Post race
Warm down:

Sat in the shade. My lovely daughter met me with a Sprite (post drink of champion middle aged back of packers everywhere). She also took my shoes off for me--which has become her post race job, what a girl!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My ability to perform faster! Lol! I am concerned about how slow (well slower than my normal slow!) my run is lately. I'm not happy with that. Time to change something.

I gave this race a good mark just because it really was awesome and I did it, however slowly I did it...I still did it! I rock!

Event comments:

Xterra Lake Tahoe...swim, climb climb climb, climb some more, and run.

Sounds like it was tough, but hopefully fun! Tahoe is tough to beat . . .

"The downhill was a bit above my pay grade" bwahahaha.
Excellent report Kim, and excellent effort. That sounds so difficult and so rewarding at the same time. I hope you do another one!

Great job! "SO MUCH FUN!" LOL

Xterras might be next on my list - I'm a mountain biker at heart - just not a RACING mountain biker. Sounds like fun though!

That sounds beautiful, but brutal! Glad you finished safely and "enjoyed" the race. I wouldn't stress about run speed for this one--it sounds like the bike really took it out of your legs (and probably a lot of other people's).
