Pre-race routine:

I had wanted to do this race individually, but due to injuries, I was part of a relay. I did the swim leg in the relay with two other guys from work.

Up at 5:15, bowl of cereal, on the road by about 5:40. Car was packed the night before.
Event warmup:

I wanted to warmup swim before the 7AM info meeting. But it was too crazy at the start trying to get things organized. So after the meeting, I got in the water and swam for about 10 minutes. I wanted to do a bit more, but it turned out just fine.

Comments:

The relay teams were in the last of 5 waves. So it was a small wave. THis was good for body-bouncing at the start, but forced us to pass slower swimmers from all the other waves.

I wanted to start out at a controlled pace and then pick up the pace on the return leg. I was successful. Nice and easy and relaxed to start the swim.

Maybe halfway through the first leg of the swim, I started passing people in previous waves. I had to navigate around people the remainder of the swim.

I was successful in staying relaxed going out. I did have some trouble navigating. For whatever reason, I was drifting to the left a touch. I typically drift to the right. Not a huge deal, but it did cost me a bit of time.

At the turn, I did run into a couple of people. But that's was the way things go.

After the turn, I picked up my pace. I started singing the Led Zepplin song, "BRING IT ON HOME". I had the guitar riff running through my head. "Bomp, bomp, bomp, bu-bomp-bomp".

I started going faster. I passed more people.

BRING IT ON HOME!

I did go a bit too hard and had to back off a bit with maybe 300 yards to go. But I settled down and then closed hard.

I got out of the water at 26:45 by my watch. I ran as quickly as I could to the transition area and crossed the mat at 27:55. Pull off the race chip, put in on Hugh, and call it a day. :)
What would you do differently?:

Not much. My 1500 pool time recently was 27:30. TO beat that by 45 seconds was pretty good. I was very happy with the swim and the result.
