August workouts: 17

I ran to and from boot camp this morning. I am counting each run as one because, well, the run home was really hard and I could've walked but I did not. And boot camp destroyed me, per usual. I'm struggling a bit trying to stay awake now, but happy it's finally Wednesday (yesterday felt like Wednesday and it was miserable). Hope everyone is well!

Adding the run before and after a workout is a great way to get extra distance. I've been biking to/from my fencing class each week (6 miles each way) which makes for a good warmup before class.

Quick ride around the neighborhood at lunch. It is absolutely gorgeous here today. I couldn’t say no to a little outdoor fun in the middle of the day. Now...back to work. Ugh

Good to see everyone is still at it.

I am super, super frustrated. This is the second August in a row where the heavy (and I mean heavy), toxic smoke from wildfires makes it impossible to exercise for weeks on end. I'm supposed to be training for a race in two and a half weeks and I can't even walk the dog...hell, I can't go outside, and haven't been able to for about two weeks. Unfortunately, I think my season might be over in terms of being able to do any kind of tri.

I was able to get away to Alaska for the weekend and got a couple of nice runs in, including a 5K at Anchorage RunFest. Flew home to....hazardous conditions. It might clear out tomorrow a bit, but with all of the fires out there I'm not really optimistic that it will stay clear enough for regular exercise. I'm very bummed....I really wanted to do a couple of races in August and September.

Since this happened last year as well, I have decided I'm going to alter my approach to training. Typically I've tried to stay in shape, tried to keep running at least (although i mostly have to give up biking) through winter, but do let things go a bit (especially swimming) and then start really training in spring. Clearly this isn't going to work with the west going up in flames every year. I think instead I am going to really start a training program in late September/early October. There is often an indoor triathlon in January/February....I'll set a heavy goal with that one (it's supposed to be "hey, try it out" sort of thing to motivate you for summer tris....I'm going to set serious goals for my distances and times and try to treat it like a "real" race), and instead of planning on racing in late June/early July through September here in WA, I may try to travel to areas for races earlier in the year, with the end of July being my "end of season"....and just be pleasantly surprised if I get the next two months to race.

With that said, biking in winter is pretty questionable for me when the days get shorter. I can put in some good rides on the weekend during the day if it's not icy, but my summer cycling program before & after work won't work out as it puts me biking home in the dark. So I am going to need to get a bike trainer. Recommendations? My house is not large, so ideally something I can easily put together/take apart a few days a week with my bike.

Super envious of all of you!!! :-) Keep up the good work!

Oh no, that has to be so frustrating! I think altering your plan sounds like a good idea.

I bought a trainer this past winter but did not use it once haha. Once I use it (definitely happening this winter) I will let you know my thoughts, but it will probably be too late by then haha. I got one with rollers, so I'm also a bit nervous to use it outside of a door frame.

Awesome bike workout this morning, even if it was on the trainer (dark outside!). Intervals. They may suck while you’re doing them, but man do they make you feel awesome afterwards!

Bike front: fitting tomorrow. If the Plasma fits, I’m buying it! I’ll post pics if it all works out.

I got so wrapped up in the bike that I’ve forgotten to say I have a race on Sunday! First of the year for me. It is a sprint about an hour from the house. Will be a good time to practice transitions and race jitters. Other than that, I’m definitely treating it as a training day—especially since I have to ride another three hours when I get home!

Sandi! Those wildfires look awful. It is good to hear you are safe, but sorry to hear about your races. It sounds like you’ve worked out a good plan for next season. Who knows, you might get an extra long season next year if Mother Nature cooperates!! As a lifelong cubs fan, I’m well versed in hanging onto hopes for next year!!

2500 yards in the pool this morning. Then I got home and deep cleaned my bathrooms b/c I'm weird. Honestly, if I could go into work an hour later than I do I would have the cleanest house. I'm so productive in the morning!

It is tri bike fitting day!!!!! And tomorrow I have a race!!!! I don't think I'll be getting anything done at work (even though I'm here at 5:45am). I have weather to check and packing lists to make and routes to obsess over!

Happy training to all today!

Ran 3.5 miles this morning. It was lovely out and I felt pretty good on the run (it was the first real run I've done in awhile). I'm a little more than a month out from my next race, so better get back into it! I think while I'm in Europe that is going to be the focus of my training since finding a pool and bike will probably be tricky.

Gretchen, good luck with the fitting and the race!!

I’m claiming all the rising during my bike fitting as a workout. An hour at 70% effort is a pretty good workout (and not so great for my tri tomorrow)!

The bike fits!! I’m so excited!! You’ll have to wait for bike porn until Monday though, since I can’t figure out how to upload photos from the app (if t is even possible).

Great morning run in the dark, with the dog and the fog. As my race approaches, the training plan has started to call for more speed work, which is actually giving me some confidence in the idea that I will be able to finish within the time limits. Last year's DNF on this HIM course has really been screwing with my head.

Race report is up from this weekend if anyone is interested (https://beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=552667).

Nice looking bike, congratulations!

Saturday I went for a 13.5 mile trail run as my last training run before my event next week. Mostly familiar trials in my local hills however I changed up some routes to gain the extra miles compared to last week's 9 mile route. Felt good the whole way and I think I'm good to go! The rest of this week will mostly be resting as I will be traveling for work training and conference however I may use the hotels exercise equipment a bit.

OWS at the lake with the college tri club. For once, I wasn’t the slowest person I the water!!! Very choppy, so times were slow and I drank more lake water than is probably advisable, but it was a good time nonetheless.

Now it is 26 August workouts!

40 minutes of strength training this morning. I'm happy to report that even though I think I've been away from the weight room for a month, I didn't lose any strength. In fact, I actually upped the weights on every machine except one. Feeling pretty good about that. Now, if I could just get the SBR portion of this triathlon thing in order! 5.5 weeks to HIM!!

Hey, folks.  Back from NoCal/Bay Area.  Yes, Sandi, smoke.  Yuck!  Wasn't toxic/overwhelming where we were in and around SF, but you could feel it.  My nose and throat hurt, sneezing a bunch.  I did NOTHING all week workout-wise, just lots of walking (and eating, and drinking microbrews, and tasting wine, and...).

Got in an easy double yesterday, 30 minutes on the bike in the morning and then a short swim/strength session late afternoon.  I then did something stupid and went to Bikram Yoga this morning.  I feel like I've been in a car accident.

Played some volleyball last night. Probably took a couple years off my life though, the air quality here has been really bad lately. Probably not as bad as where Sandi is, but you could see the smog over the city yesterday. Gross.

Swam 2100 yards this morning. Felt really tired and slow, but glad I got it in.

200m swim...I cannot in good conscience count that as a workout! I'll wait until Friday to decide if the bike and run are separate...you know, if I'm at 29 workouts on Friday! :P

Didn't you do a warm up and cool down too? haha I get it. You should still count the bike and run separate though.
