Pre-race routine:

Dress, redress, dress again
Event warmup:

Dress and undress a few more times to figure out temps vs clothing. In the end, a heavy LS tech shirt, bike jersey, fleece sleeves, and a windbreaker.
  • 4h 32m 33s
  • 40 miles
  • 8.81 mile/hr

Cut time from last year on a course that was a bit longer and had more singletrack. I cramped at mile 25 pretty bad. From there to mile 31, I completely hurt. I lost all my gels somewhere on the singletrack. I had a few conversations with myself during the last 10 miles or so, but pretty much stayed the course. Last gel was at mile 20, which probably contributed to the conversations with myself at the end and the cramping.

I stopped 5 times: once to remove a jacket, then to fix the jacket on my pack, once to eat a gel, once to relieve myself in the woods, and finally to text Ann at mile 31. Much improved from last year.
What would you do differently?:

This was the worst I looked at the end of a race. I think if it were possible to not lose gels and nearly lose a jacket, that would be good. I am really happy with this one, I can see improvements.
Post race
Warm down:

Brats and hydration. Iced Tea, Water, Beer.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lost Gels?

Event comments:

Truly enjoy the hometown event. SCORR keeps making it better and better.

Nice work Chris. I don't like riding in the cold for that very reason, dealing with extra layers....And losing nutrition sucks! Glad you pushed through, we learn a lot about ourselves in cases like these!

Congrats on what sounds like a fun day! Losing gels is always demoralizing but at least you were able to have a good talk with yourself about it!

Luckily for me, the earlier racers had scared the pigs away!

Cramping, lost gels, talking to yourself for a big chunk of the race and you still are happy with the results AND beat last year's time, awesome!  Piggy didn't get his revenge on you!   Nice work out there!

Talking to yourself is not anything to worry about, it's when you start answering back you should become concerned.
