Sunny
Total Time = 1h 48m 14s
Overall Rank = 1098/
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 0/
Pre-race routine:

got up at 3:30 hopped in the shower and got dressed. finished getting my gear and the kids stuff together. ate a bagel with peanut butter and a banana with a cup of cofee and some gatorade. got to the race site at about 5:45. got out of the car and immediately lost my balloon, oh well, went to the transition area while being eaten alive by mosquitos. (note to self, don't forget the bug spray next year)
Event warmup:

rack the bike, find mary and a place to pee. had a good stretch at home so jumped and walked around to get some blood flowing, worried.
Swim
  • 13m 43s
  • 600 meters
  • 02m 17s / 100 meters
Comments:

i underestimated myself here and started in the back outside so i would get swum (swam?)over and then it turned out that i kept swimming over people and having to around them which threw my navigation off. once i got in a groove, i'd be on top of someone.
What would you do differently?:

get in an open water swim before race day and start in the front. work more on navigating in open water
Transition 1
  • 06m 22s
Comments:

i took the time to DOWN a bottle of gatorade in the transition area because i am so bad and nervous about hydrating on the bike. it "works" for me in that i don't feel dehydrated on the ride but man that is a horrible T1 time. the shoot out of the transition area was too small with no passing, after i passed where i could get on my bike, volunteers kept saying "walk down a little further and get on down there" well with people whizzing by me and others trying to find a safe place to hop on, it just wasn't working. so sorry if i got in anyone's way but i didn't like how that bike start was set up.
What would you do differently?:

practice hydrating with the camel pack to feel comfortable enough to use on race day, need to cut that T1 time down
Bike
  • 43m 40s
  • 11 miles
  • 15.11 mile/hr
Comments:

i passed some but was passed more than i passed. at about mile 8, my stinking shoelace got caught in my chain! YIKES! ithought i was going down and would be out for a little while, luckily after a few minutes (felt likes hours) of pulling, the laces came free and i shoved them in my shoe and got back on the bike, broke one of my pedal cages and finished the last three miles.
What would you do differently?:

invest in some better cages and shoes WITHOUT laces
Transition 2
  • 01m 58s
Comments:

good except i forgot about the stinkin photographer and almost ran him over while pulling on my t-shirt and starting the run, that should make for a nice photo!
What would you do differently?:

not mow down the photographer
Run
  • 42m 28s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 13m 42s  min/mile
Comments:

i ran the whole thing, clearly not at lighting pace but i ran which was one of my goals.
What would you do differently?:

i could have pushed myself harder at the end.
Post race
Warm down:

went to find mary on the course and run with her for a minute til she got in the final straight away. kissing and hugging my hubby, kids, mom, dad, brother-in-law, niece and Ita. had a banana and some water and cheered on the final finishers

What limited your ability to perform faster:

equipment (shoelace issue for example) and these last 15 pounds i still need to loose

Event comments:

great positive supportive atmosphere. loved it and will be back next year!

Awesome job Carol!

Great that you ran the whole course. You had an awesome swim!

With more experience you will be more comfortable on your bike. Maybe consider clipless pedals so as not to have to worry about shoelaces and broken cages. The spds are easy to get in and out of and will really make a difference in the way that you ride.

You did great! : )

Great going on the race. Congrats- you are now a TRIATHLETE!!!!!!! Great time on the swim considering how congested it was. I just couldn't get into any kind of good space to swim well.
