Run
Comments: Fun event. The 10k started at 8:00 and th3e 5k started at 8:30. This was a change (they used to start 5 minutes apart and the faster 10k runners would overlap with slower 5k runners causing a problem for 10k runners going for time). What would you do differently?: I thought that I could do this at a slightly faster pace so I started out too fast. Post race
Warm down: After the extremely long awards ceremony, Kevin, Zoe and I went to Fort Fisher State Recreation Area just down the road. Fort Fisher is dog friendly and the bath houses were opened so I changed out of running gear and then we took Zoe out on the beach. I knew this but I had forgotten that the Badwater Cape Fear ultra event was on the same day. I knew two people competing in the 50 miler. I did not realize that event ran on the beach at Fort Fisher with a rest area/turn around right at the bath house there! We watched a few of the runners. (the main comment that I heard about the event was "high tide sucked") Event comments: Fun event with great turnout and support. The 5k is really the focus here but it's a nice 10k as well. This was a last minute event for me. Kevin and I decided that we could do a day trip to the beach if the weather looked decent. When we decided that the weather would hold, I did a last minute on line registration and set the alarm for o'dark thirty (aka 4:00). I got up and confirmed that the storms were all well off shore and then dressed and walked Zoe. I had half a bagel with peanut butter and a banana. I took some water for the car and Kevin made some coffee for the 2+ hour drive. We left home at about 4:35 to arrive close to 7:00 for packet pickup.
The drive was uneventful. Once we got to Wilmington, we made a quick stop to use a flush toilet before making our way through town to Carolina Beach.
We arrived right at 7:00, parked, and went to packet pickup. I got my number and headed back to the car with Kevin and Zoe in tow.
Zoe was super stoked for her adventure. So many people to greet! I walked her a bit to try to get the crazy down a notch but that did not help. When we got back to the car, it was time for my warm up run. I peeled off layers to get down to my shorts and long-sleeved tee and took Zoe for a warm-up run. Then we gradually made our way to the starting line by The Sea Merchant grocery store. Then it was time for the Irish Blessing
May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face;
the rains fall soft upon your fields
and until we meet again,
may God hold you in the palm of His hand.
and we were off!
