So I have to ask, because not everyone is dark and twisted like me:  What do well-meaning spectators and fellow athletes say to you during a race that really bugs you? And what words really motivate?  I'm asking because I sometimes hesitate to give words of encouragment to fellow athletes during competition for fear of insulting them.  Things like "looking good" as you're leaving them in the dust might not be taken in the best light.

Thanks for the feedback.  I promise I'll try not to use it against you should our paths cross!

When people pass me on the run....and most of the field does.....esp if I am taking a walk break and people say "come on keep going"...Like if I COULD Would I be walking?  Lots of people have regimented walk-run things they are doing.  Let them do their thing.  The run is a big struggle for some of us.  I don't mind so much if people say good job or keep it up but don't tell me how to run..or walk....my race.  I'm doing the best I can I promise.    I really hate it when the specaotrs tell me how far there is...let me think its around the corner and be in my own fantasy world.

The WORST most inconsiderate people on the course are the people who WON the f-ing race and because they didn't get enough exercise for the day have to go out and run the run course a second time and make us slow runners really feel like Sh*t....if the race isn't long enough for you do a longer one and have a little respect.

Yeah, I agree with both of you.  To hear a spectator tell me how much further I have to go, or to blatantly lie to me and tell me the finish is "just around the corner!" really pisses me off.  Maybe I'll get a running shirt made that says "If you tell me how much further I have to go, I'm gonna kick your A$$!"

I hate it when spectators tell me to "Push harder!" or "Come on! Keep it going!"

Why don't you put down the frappucino, throw some shoes on and get your a** if you think it's just that easy?

I know that at the LA Triathlon, there was a dude in a parked car, windows open, radio blasting "Eye of the Tiger." That was great--it totally cracked me up. I hope he had it looped.

only long enough to tie his laces... then it's off to the races with a frosty beverage.

The most inspirational thing I've heard during a race was "It's all downhill to the finish" and they were right!

I am too new to have a least favorite thing, I think. I do have a favorite though, my wife and kids shouting "GO DADDY" that was awesome.

Goodness, we have a long list of what we hate.

I do like: "Race your race", "lookin' strong", "good job" , "go girl", and stuff like that. A simple acknowlegement that I am doing my best.

from spectators, I like it when they say things like "Go get 'em" or just smile and clap. Or "you have already run further than I can in a whole month!".

I don't like the "You are almost there" comments.

But I do like helpful comments like "watch the sharp turn at the bottom of this hill" or "Your competition is only 15 seconds ahead of you". "You're catching her".

Except for the misleading comments about distance from volunteers (not spectators - why would you take their word for it?) I try to not let anything bother me.  Of course, so far most of my races have been in the rain so I've been really impressed by people's willingness to stand out there for a long time doing nothing just to be there when my a$$ runs by so whatever they want to say is cool with me.  They certainly didn't stand there the whole time to say something to intentionally be annoying.

Think about it, if we're sometimes not sure what to say to fellow competitors, how are they always supposed to know the right thing to say?

I've learned not to pay any real attention to how far I supposedly have to go - unless it's from someone that's finished before me and actually *knows* - doesn't really bother me, I know it's just all lies to make me feel better.

I only did my first race ever earlier this year.  I am just tickled pink to even be in a race.  Even if I am feeling bad, I am smiling.  I think it is cool to have people standing on the "sidelines" cheering and I have no problem with people who pass me giving me words of encouragement.  I don't know.  At this stage of my racing career (hahahahaha! career!) it is ALL good!!!!

Come on folks, lighten up. Those people are there to spur you on, not belittle your efforts. Depending on how you are feeling that day, "looking good" is a compliment or an insult. Are they supposed to know?

I'm not religious, but if someone were to say "God bless you", I would take it for the spirit in which it was meant. You all should too. Either that, or get used to empty race routes.

as i said, it's all in good fun.

nobody here really 'hates' spectators or volunteers - we're just making a bit of fun of them.

that said - some racers need to be shot. there was a guy at the Donner Lake Tri who took a drink of water from a little girl and spit it back into her face and thought it was the funniest thing on earth to do. i didn't see it, my mother who was a spectator told me about it. if i had seen it i'd have done things to him that would have gotten me disqualified for sure.

Wow....That is out of control.. I hope I never see anything like that. I would go from doing a Tri to training for the UFC. He sounds like he needs a few elbows and a guillotine. ...

i also ran with a guy at the Big Kahuna who yelled at a volunteer "what the **** do you think you're doing? i asked for Gatorade, not water!". i had a choice exchange of words with him.

i will NEVER blame volunteers for anything. they make the races possible. it's our responsibility as racers to behave. it bugs me to no end to see behaviour like that.

Let me turn this around and ask ...

As someone who volunteers alot ... and knows less than 1% of the race participants ... but is moved to yell *something* at the hundreds and/or thousands of people that are racing ... what is the most acceptable?
