Pre-race routine:

FIRST HIM! Second person to arrive at the race site. I was worried I'd be late and couldn't sleep anyway. Had a little coffee and cereal bar. Helped bring in the race packets so I could pick mine up! Visited the toilet and started to unpack.
Event warmup:

No warm up for this...I was planning on about a 20 minute swim for warm up and then another 20 minute swim to race! :-) Worked out to just about that!
Swim
  • 42m
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 59s / 100 yards
Comments:

I really didn't go very hard and kept my HR down. A little tight in the shoulders but nothing much after warming up a little. Pretty bright sun after the 2nd turn.
What would you do differently?:

Um, swim faster...a lot faster! I should have been about 5 minutes faster!
Transition 1
  • 03m 14s
Comments:

Chatted with Ron and Chris a little. Took a couple of bites of power bar. Smiled for Jennifers camera! :-) Just another day in the park!
What would you do differently?:

Um, go faster seems to be the theme!
Bike
  • 3h 11m 15s
  • 56 miles
  • 17.57 mile/hr
Comments:

What a pansy!
What would you do differently?:

Um, sticking with the "go faster" theme. But hey, I have a soccer game Wednesday...gotta save some legs for that!
Transition 2
  • 01m 36s
Comments:

wasn't looking forward to this!!! only run 13.1 once in training.
What would you do differently?:

you know...
Run
  • 2h 16m 1s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 10m 23s  min/mile
Comments:

i hooked up with a lady from Birmingham, AL that helped me a lot. she and i ran 6 mins, and walked 1 for the entire race. my calves cramped severely at the finish. Jennye from AL...THANK YOU! you absolutely were an angel sent to help me! i wasn't mentally prepared for this but you pulled me through!
What would you do differently?:

run a few more 13's in training.
Post race
Warm down:

ha...warm down? i nearly passed out! whomever decided the finish should be an uphill like THAT should be beaten with a pair of sweaty shoes!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

lack of training the last 5 weeks! it's really hard with 2nd grade twins to get in training time. when school started back i was limited to about an hour a day. not quite enough for an event like this.

Event comments:

i think it was a great race! set-up does a great job. there WAS food when i got back from putting away my stuff!

Course: I zig-zagged a little. My anti-fog goggles were fogging. The girl in the kayak was very nice to steer me back on course. I really had a great time on this swim regardless! I found someone with a bright suit and drafted the 2nd half...watched for sighting and adjusted to them...worked well.

Nice job, I feel your pain about not getting good sleep the night before the race.

Congrats!!!!  I'm just training for a sprint, so mega props from a newbie!  How was the race location, set up, etc?  I know this is in a pretty area of SC and remember seeing it when surfing the web for tris in the Carolinas.  Forgot it was this weekend!  Great job on the finish!!!!

Great race.  I think the heat surprised everyone and caused us to struggle on the run.  Overall it is a tremendous accomplishment.  Wear the medal with pride!!!

Congratulations on the finish.

The bike course was a lot tougher (and certainly a lot rougher) that I thought it would be.  Like how they made the run course as flat as they could ... but even then I felt the hills with each step (and more so in the later miles ).

Incidently, the first person who showed up to the transition area is a friend from Team-in-Training. This was her first H-IM and she also could not sleep!

Congrats on the HIM finish. I second Brian's comments on the rough road on the bike.

I had a decent run but I was noticing how many athletes seemed to be struggling through it!

was it just me or did the bike seem like it was 90% up hill? the down hills seemed pretty short and the flats just weren't very flat! and i want to know whose idea it was to have a huge hill to the finish! sheesh! that person (jeremy davis) should be beaten with a wet noodle!

it seemed like there was a lot of slow (but short) climbs and very few (any?) downhills where you could coast. NOT THAT I WOULD EVER COAST, but still...plus there was that light headwind from mile 20-40 that kind of exasperated the lack of downhill. The hills I train on here in Atlanta are much steeper so the inclines didn't bother me at all.

Still, I thought the bike ride was pretty nice. The roads out there were definitely kinda rough in spots, especially that gravel ride at around mile 50 or so.

Awesome job, Eric!  What a way to push through the run even with cramped calves.  And I can't believe that run finish either.  Plain cruelty!

If it was me on with rattling aero-bottle, I'm so sorry.  It was driving me absolutely nuts and I knew that it would annoy the other riders around me.  I was just happy to be off the road.

Good luck with continued future training and racing!

Nice job!  I've heard that course is extremely hilly.  I kinda decided not to do that race because of the hills- after reading your RR I'm glad I didn't do it, becuase I struggle iwht hills.

Way to get a 1/2 IM under your belt- cograts!  And isn't it nice that you can always find someone on the run course to keep you going when you need it the most?  This sport is awesome- so many nice athletes out there!  Congrats again on a challenging first 1/2 IM!
