Lake Lanier Island, Georgia
United States
63F / 17C
Overcast
Total Time = 1h 22m 34s
Overall Rank = 150/600
Age Group = clyd 200-224
Age Group Rank = 7/33
Pre-race routine:

set up transition area, ate half a marathon bar and a gu, went to the restroom and walked to the swim start to warm up.
Event warmup:

jogged up the stairs to pick up heart rate. Stretched for about ten minutes- working the shins and calves especially (shin splints are hurting)
Swim
  • 08m 18s
  • 400 yards
  • 02m 05s / 100 yards
Comments:

I had a pretty good swim- no wetsuit to help me- passed a lot of people. I still can get much faster, so I am very optimistic
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Transition 1
  • 03m 31s
Comments:

toughest t1 ever. After the swim we had to run uphill a couple hundred yards to transition area. I was a little creaky with the cold air and fumbled around a bit
What would you do differently?:

I struggled getting the shoes on. I was a little cold. I will eventually get some tri shoes. the longest part was getting to the transition. In my defense everyone had 3-5 minute T1 times
Bike
  • 42m 42s
  • 13 miles
  • 18.27 mile/hr
Comments:

I was passing people early- then started getting passed toward the end but still had a good average. The course was a little longer than 13 miles so the avg speed was off- my computer had me at 19.3. I was suprised to place so high in this part of the race.
What would you do differently?:

I need to find more time to cycle. Also i really am starting to want a better bike- i think it could shave some good time
Transition 2
  • 01m 19s
Comments:

I forgot to put the yanks on my new shoes so i had to tie them!- otherwise it went smooth
What would you do differently?:

put the yanks on my shoes
Run
  • 26m 47s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 37s  min/mile
Comments:

i thought i was slow but i actually did my best ever official 5k- running and biking aside- so i really cant complain
What would you do differently?:

just keep training- it seems to be working
Post race
Warm down:

hugged my wife and 2 yr old son. walked around then ate some pizza and drank some water. Should have stretched.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

shin splints and also I feel that i slacked on the training the last couple weeks with heavy work demands so i was carrying 3-4 pounds extra and could feel it.

Event comments:

Very impressed that this this is a first time event. It was well organized and i have no complaints. post race food was great- sorry i could niot stick around for results/awards

Great race!  Wasn't that run to T1 a total PAIN!!!  I think my legs were frozen and it took a few min. into the bike to get going!  I did make me feel better too that the T1 times were pretty slow...so no need to defend yourself there!

Good job!

Congrats on the race! You had a great time. It sounds like that hill out of the water was a bear!

... ain't nothing like setting a 5k PR after swimming and biking.  Congratulations!

Bike buying season is just starting as the the prices of the '06's will continue to drop over the off season. (I ended up getting my '05 Cervelo Dual in March of '06 and got an incredible deal on it).

Great job & congrats on the 5k PR. T1 was a total PITA. And what was up with the T2 dismount so close to the crest of that hill??
