Pre-race routine:

Ate cereal. Got kids dressed to go to grandma's. Bundled myself up. Dreaded what might be ahead of me...
Event warmup:

Stood in a long line to get race numbers. They gave out gloves to all of the participants! I was pleased with that because the gloves I had I felt were too heavy. Talked to Dudley for a couple of minutes and admired his cool Santa hat! Rob and I put our numbers on. Then I realized we had each other's numbers and had to switch them around. (We did that last year in our first ever 5K and never noticed it. He got credited with my very good time! I was a little peeved with that...) Stood in another line to go potty. Then finally got outside for a short jog and stretch before the race began.

Comments:

I was sort of dreading this race. It was cold out and I was not feeling in any sort of shape for it. But, my hubby was feeling good, and I was determined to stay with him. I never thought my goal would be to stay with Rob, but he's managed to turn himself into a pretty strong runner, and I've been taking a hiatus from any real run training. Needless to say, I felt pretty crummy most of the run. And the wind was pretty awful, especially on Westfall Road. Every now and then, Rob would pull ahead for a few seconds and then I would catch back up. A few times I pulled ahead, but he always caught back up. I could tell he wasn't going to be Mr. Nice Husband if it came down to who was going to "win". I always manage somehow to find a little extra at the end and was able to sprint faster than Rob to the finish line. I beat him by 2 seconds! I don't think it will be that "easy" next year.

I got a little too warm about half way through and took my gloves off. Then eventually lowered my zipper on my jacket and fleece top.

We ran the first mile in 7:30.

Oh yeah, I won my AG!! I was very surprised by that considering my semi-bad attitude going into it, and not feeling any sort of nervous jitters beforehand, which usually adds to my faster pace. And, contrary to Dudley's idea that I would get a gold jingle bell as a prize, I got a very cute tree ornament with the race logo on one side and "First in age group" writing on the other. Of course, it will be placed front and center on this year's tree!! :)
What would you do differently?:

Warmed up a little more beforehand. Maybe not worn 2 long sleeve fleece tops. I always end up being too warm rather than not warm enough. But, I wouldn't have done nearly as well as I did if I didn't have Rob there pushing me.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around. Watched Dudley finish, then went for some coffee.
Talked to marmadaddy, dexter and kenj for a little while. Really nice guys!

Marmadaddy almost had me talked into traveling to New Hampshire for a triathlon! I might, but I do seem to remember that the state is one big freakin' mountain! I'll have to think about it... :)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of any real training, especially sprint intervals/higher intensity drills.

Event comments:

The lines to get race packets were very long. It would have saved A LOT of time if they'd done a packet pick-up yesterday.

The day ended up being beautiful! Very sunny and not as cold as I thought it was going to be. Glad I did it (now that it's over! :) )
