Overall Rank = 346/386

Pre-race routine:

Up at 3:30, out the door around 4:30. We had to stop for gas and at the bank, but were solidly on the road by 5 am. I napped in the back seat for about an hour, but had to stop to pee at about 6:30 am. We got to the part at 7:40 and it was packed!

I ate oatmeal at home, and a Clif Bar on the road. I drank as much sports drink and water as I could, knowing it was going to be hot.
Event warmup:

No real warm up. I set up transistion and get my stuff together. I got into the water about 5 minutes before my wave and got adjusted to the water.
Swim
  • 35m 21s
  • 1207 meters
  • 02m 56s / 100 meters
Comments:

At the time, I felt badly about my time, not knowing that the course was longer! Looking at the numbers now, I see that I was actually faster than my last race! If I were to do some fancy math and figure out my time for the same distance, I was 2 minutes faster overall on the swim! Woo hoo!

I was really happy with my pacing and sighting. I was able to breathe every third pull, which means I was nice and relaxed.
What would you do differently?:

Not much really. I need new goggles that don't get huge beads of water on them, keeping me from seeing the bouy.
Transition 1
  • 04m 14s
Comments:

I'm using my T1 time from last race because I forgot to hit the lap button on the way out until I was about 2 minutes on the ride. But the times seem pretty comparable.

Goggles and swim cap off -- dry feet -- socks and running shoes on. Pulled on helmet, snapped on race belt, and grabbed bike and ran out.

My socks went on nice and easily, thanks to Dana's suggestion of rolling them up.
What would you do differently?:

Practice T1. My shoes take the longest because I have to cinch them up tightly. But I'm getting better at doing it quickly.
Bike
  • 1h 00m 57s
  • 14 miles
  • 13.78 mile/hr
Comments:

I managed to trim off one minute over my time from last month. I wish I had been able to go faster, but the hills and my mountain bike were against me.

I am happy to report, again, that I was not passed by any mountain bikes! And I did manage to pass two road bikes (although they *were* going rather slowly).

I ate half a Clif Bar at the beginning of the ride, and had a Clif Shot at the turnaround point. I drank 1 1/2 bottles of water during the ride.
What would you do differently?:

A new bike? Other than that, I need to train more on riding with toe clips and get stronger at going up hills. Also, I would have had some sort of sports drink in my bottles rather than plain water.
Transition 2
  • 01m 17s
Comments:

OK, it's easy to have a good T2 when all you have to do is rack your bike and switch your helmet with your race hat. :)
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really.
Run
  • 39m 28s
  • 5 kms
  • 07m 53s  min/km
Comments:

Uggg! Hot. Hot. Hot. Dusty! I hate this run. It's so dry and hot and exposed. I swear, the aid station is father out than it is back!

I took off fast from my bike, but when I got to the end of transition, I felt awful! I managed to run about 100 yards and then had to stop and walk and catch my breath. I had a side stitch in my abdomen. I ran the first mile, but stopped to walk the up hills. When I saw the aid station, I made myself run in. I grabbed a cup of water and a cup of Cytomax. I let myself pause by the trash can to drink both, then made myself run the rest of the way in, with only one other walk break.

I didn't really find my stride until about mile 2. I made myself run one minute and then the next minute, and then the next minute, until I was about 1/4 mile from the finish, and managed to run the rest of the way in, with a good little sprint in the finish chute.

This run was ALL mental for me. I was really hating it and was very emotionally upset with myself and my performance.
What would you do differently?:

I really need to train on my running.
Post race
Warm down:

At the end of the finish chute, I found my BF and cried on his shoulder. I've seen other women cry at the finish line, and now I know why. It was such an emotionally trying experience for me.

Once I managed to compose myself, I drank some water and some Cytomax and walked around a bit to cool down. I ate some orange slices and drank a lot more Cytomax.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Training, or the lack thereof. And negative emotional self-talk.

Event comments:

I like the TBF races. They're fun and a great way for beginners to get into the sport.

Isn't it great to have that benchmark and see the improvement from race to race?

WTG MK! Great race, good self-assessment on what needs to be done to improve.

But, to paraphrase Tom Hanks, " There is no crying in triathlons."

Dana

Dana,

My friend Jenny and I had talked ourselves into doing the long course at Wildflower...."we have PLENTY of time to train"

We chatted with Karen and Eric after the race....they looked at us, mouth agape, shocked expressions..."no, no, no, no, noooooooooooooooooo, you don't understand....this is WILDFLOWER!!!!"

"Well, we want to do the 1/2 vineman next year!" we said...

"No, no, no, no, noooooooooooo, you don't undertstand, this is WILDFLOWER! If you do the OLYMPIC course at Wildflower you will be PLENTY prepared for the 1/2 Vineman"

Needless to say, after a bit more info on the course at Vineman Jenny and I are now definitely doing the Oly instead.....

So, yes...COUNT ME IN FOR WILDFLOWER, BABBBEEEEE!

Woohooo!!

Here's something that might help you keep it in perspective. Already a slow bike time (avg of 14 mph) on a typical 56 mile road in Sonoma county, I averaged 12 mph at Wildflower. Ugh!!!!!!!!!!!

So excited!!! Camporee!!

D

PS, Karen, sorry for hijacking!!!

Eric had a great suggestion for our BT Tri in Oct. Maybe, instead of doing an actual Triathlon, we could set up a training weekend at Lake San Antonio and ride and run the course? It might be a good idea to get to know the Olympic course prior to seriously beginning training. I've done the run course, and it's H-A-R-D! I swear it's all uphill, except for the last mile, which is straight downhill.

What say you all?

if we can find a good weekend I'd definitely go....we may have to move it out of october, though. I'm out of town one weekend and then dana and I hvae providiian another.....the mock tri that month will work, though....

maybe we can rally a group of us to head down there in dec/jan???? It's a great idea and would be a fun trip with y'all...!

I also forgot to mention that I had a horrible horrible sinus headache during the swim. Really bad! I thought my head was going to explode. Fortunately, as soon as I got out of the water, it went away. My allergies "attacked me" that morning before I left home, but I didn't want to take any medicine because it would dehydrate me, and I was already concerned about staying hydrated in the heat.

The next race (triathlon anyway) is Oct 3, The Luna Bar Challenge. Same place, similar distances. I've just started my seven week training plan. I hope to see an improvement overall. We'll see.

Just so you know, I happen to have a free camping pass to Lake San Antonio that expires end of December. Hmmm....

I'm thinking this has real promise!! Can we bring other playmates?? I'm assuming yes, since BF is coming!!

Cosy campfire, chilled beer, toasted marshmallows... oh and... a... biking.

I'll look at my calendar as well. It's not a short drive I'm afraid. If it were possible to take a Monday off it would make it a better deal. So then we could have all day Sat. and Sun.

If I remember correctly it takes 3 hours from my house, so 4-4.5 for you folks.

Hey madkat, great RR. Good job!

Now hijacking the rest of the message:
Lake San Antonio sounds interesting... but... I thought we had the N Cal BT event on 10/16? Are we rescheduling for Lake San Antonio?

If you guys decide to do this, I might be able to come, make sure you post it in the Group Workout area ok? I don't want to miss it.

You're right, Shellee we've completely hijacked the thread and taken the focus off of fabulous Karen. Karen, you're fabulous!!

Now back to the hijacking... it just now came up as a thought. We'll have to e-chat about it. I think it would be really fun to do. In any case, let's move the part of the conversation which doens't have to do with how fabulous Karen is to the group training venue!

Fabulous!!
