Subject: Are there any non-morning triathletes?
I was just wondering who you are and how you deal with the training and races.  I am not a morning person and would much rather work out at 10:00 at night then 7:00 in the morning.  However, where I live there are no gyms close by that are open that late.  Thus my training is done after work which means hoards of people - or I just feel rundown from work. (Once the weather gets better I will be able to run/bike outside again) Further, every triathlon is scheduled in the wee hours of the morning.  Thus, I would like to know how you have dealt with training and races.  Maybe I need to bite the bullet and just change my habits..(kind of hard because the wife works until midnight a few nights a week) but it would be possible.  Thanks for any insight....and just where are all the races that start at 9:00 a.m.? Still looking...

Not a morning person, but thanks to Starbucks I CAN be.....

Honestly....coffee is my training aid.  I drink a cup before all of my morning workouts.

I don't think I have ever had a cup of coffee and don't find it that appetizing to start..also I see how people get without it..I have more than enough problems than to add coffee addiction...

jdbadger - 2007-01-28 10:02 AM  Further, every triathlon is scheduled in the wee hours of the morning.

"Wee hours of the morning" is like 4:15 AM when I get up to get ready to go to work.  Most tris start around 8-9 AM (IM 7 AM)...the morning is half over by then!!!    I think a change may be in order.

4:15 is not the wee hours - that is the time between night and day that only the evil and undead walk the earth...and donut makers.   Still looking for the 9:00 tri - even if it is a 7:00 it means getting up at 5:00 or earlier.

I work out at night for the most part. I have a trainer for my bike and we bought a treadmill. I can get a short work out in the Am but my son gets up at 5:30-6:00 or I have to be at work by 6:30.

LOL evi land undead...I'm with ya!!! I HATE training early in the am.  I have to get up by 6 for work anyway.  I used to try to swim in the am rising at 4:30 but then I just felt like crap for days and all I wanted to do was nap.  Somehow the race day thing doesn't bother me tho.

I'm definitely not a morning person.  Heck, I woke up just now (8:45 - and that's early for a Sunday) and thought.. nah, it's too early to run.

I just don't do morning training - period.  Can't do it!  I find excuses to sleep in.. so I just quit trying.  As such, I fit my training in on my lunch hour, right after work, or schedule my evening around it.  As for preparing myself for races, I try to wake up early a few days before the race.  That way, it doesn't come as such a shock to my system.  So.. if it's a Sunday race, I'll wake up at 6:30 on Thursday, 6:00 on Friday, 5:30 on Saturday and 5:00 on Sunday.

I know of a few races that have a 9am start, but they're up here in Canada.  PM me if you really really really want to know.

The race I did last weekend was 10 am start. That was niiiice. (Except for the fact that I didn't sleep so well the night before so it didn't really matter.)Smile

In order to sustain any workout routine you can't go against your nature and expect to stick with it. I'm not a morning person period. I spent 13 years in the Navy being forced to get up at O my god its early, and hated it! I can't force myself to get up super early to workout before work. So I don't fight that batte. I run during my lunch hour and bike on the trainer after the kids go to bed, and work my weekend schedule around so it doesn't involve getting up too early. I know some people can't sleep well if they work out late, but for me after a nice hard workout and a shower I'm out like a light.
As far as getting up early for races, well if I paid money to do something, I'll drag myself out of bed to it.

Not a morning person at all. Do all my workouts at 11pm and later on the weekdays due to schedule. Unfortunately, that means run and bike in the dark but I'm used to it and have the equipment (lights, etc) for it. Run, bike and swim on the weekends during the day.

All my races have started in the wee hours which sucks but I only race like 2 or 3 races a year, so not that big of a problem.

I loves me some sleep.  I hate early morning workouts and even if my head is ready for them I normally feel sluggish.  I do most of my training during lunch and after work on weekdays and in the afternoon on weekends.  I've tried to fit in morning training but I just can't do it consistently and realize that they don't work for me.  Train when you feel best and you know you will consistently hit your workouts.

As far as race mornings, come on, it's race morning.  I never have a problem getting ready, just get enough sleep the previous two nights and a big cup of strong coffee.

I HATE working out in the morning. My body hates it too. Nothing ever works *right*.

Fortunately, I don't have a husband (or a live-in) or kids... so I can workout at lunch (gym at work), or after work.

As far as races... I just suck it up and go do it. Although, I tend to not race that often, because I hate getting up at 4:00 AM.

I don;t mind working out in the morning as long as it is after 8 am!!!  I think that as you get into the habit of working out you find that you get used to the hours you have.  I didn't like to work out at all in the morning until it was then or not at all.  I now find that my mornings (and day) go much better if I can get that workout in.  I also seem better able to concentrate in my classes after exercising.

BTW--I drink a cup of coffee each morning but that is all the caffeine I have for the day-most the time!!

Well, HRM tells me there is a pulse when I get up at those times, so undead is out.  Hmm, must make me evil.  Moohaa haa!!

I do most of my training at night also. I tried doing it in the morning and didn't mind it, but it was hard to be consistent with it. I do find that race day doesn't bother me because I'm so excited.

I am not an AM person (training wise) so I usually train during lunch and after work. When my training cranks up I do try to get a few AM sessions but it isn’t easy. On weekends I do train as early as possible in particular as a get close to a race to get use to it.

Being a morning person myself, I don't see how anyone could train for a 70.3 or 140.6 without morning workouts.

Just set your watch ahead the night before the race and don's ask anyone else what time it is. You'll be ready to go at 9:00, and everyone else will be ready at 7:00.

Totally agree with you...WAYYYY too early to be our of bed! I have found that its important to train at whatever time seems early to you for a while, and then push it earlier. For example, 11am used to feel early to me. So I would haul myself out of bed and be out the door no later than 11:30. Then I got used to it and bumped my time earlier. I'm still never on the road/in the gym/in the water before 9am, but its getting better all the time!

And if you want to be really jealous of a race start time, I am scheduled to race in March at 3:45pm...I can even sleep in if I want to!! God bless Canada..

I do both. Working for myself has its perks where I can somewhat set my own schedule, but also some days I am in the first one in the door at the Y at 5:00AM. I think the 70 year olds wonder what I am doing in the pool at that time of day but whatever.

On the other side of the coin tonite I have a 11 mile run and a 40 min ride on the trainer that I won't even start til at least 9:00 maybe 10:00 so I see both sides of the training spectrum.

If I had my druthers, I'd wake at 730 am. But because of family etc, I am forced to get up at 440 am during the week to hit the gym. (after work hours just don't work anymore now that I'm married and have a family).

I wish races started at like 9 am (vs 7-8) That way I'd have a better chance of getting my hubster up and to a race at it's start time!
