Why do I get a stomach ache after swimming? I am pretty sure I am not swallowing water. I am pretty sure if I was gulping air- I would be burping a lot? Im not. I dont wantto do anything after my swim- much less ride a bike.
FYI- I have just recently started to up my swimming distance.

Thanks!

Is it a stomach ache or sore abs? If it is sore abs, you must be doing something right....Mine always hurt when I get my stroke right.

If it is your actual stomach, then it is something completely different.

Feel your pain, since upping my distance into the 2000 yard + workouts I have felt very bloated and almost like"gassy" after swimming. My stomach would kind of feel tight. Love to hear what I am doing wrong.

There's lots of bonafide MDs here. I'm sure they'll tell you to see a doc, but they may also point you in the right direction.

Good luck.

my stomach kinda feels lousy after/during swims.  i'm pretty sure it's just the floating/rotating/sloshing around after eating a meal that makes me feel that way. it's never stopped me from getting on the bike afterward, but i'll bet we're not the only one's who experience something like this.

 waiting for the dotors' replies

are you eating before swimming?  if you eat before swimming, you need at least 30 minutes to let it digest before you swim, otherwise i get stomachaches.  also, i get stomachaches if i go directly from hot tub to pool, and vice versa.

I experience it occasionally too.  I haven't tracked it to food timing or combinations (yet). Gives me more to think about on pre-race meals though.

I posted on this last year - had/have the same issue I think. After swimming for more than 30 minutes I always had a upset stoch and a lot of gas... Never had burping problems.
Most responses I got where about breathing.
I am still working on this. what I have fixed since then is to breath out under water and only breath in when bringing your head above water. This gives more time to breath in and thus it can be done without gulping for air. This has helped a lot. If I swim at an easy pace for an hour or so now I am OK. I only still have the problem if I do long swim trainings with more intensive intervals ... and yes, I am them sometimes gasping for air.
So I do beleive it has to do with getting your breathing relaxed.

I have this symptom as well. I do find when and what I eat and how far I swim have a definite impact on this. For some reason bananas in particular kill me. I now try just liquid nutrition(protien shake if anything) at least an hour before swimming. This seems to help me.

I also have suffered from an occasional upset stomach after swim workouts. I changed up what I ate for breakfast and have had good luck so far. Milk and cereal even an hour before swimming just didn't agree with me

I get pretty bad seasick where sometimes I have to take dramamine. Could it be related?

Have similar symptoms to some - bloated feeling after the swim; very gassy.  I always wrote off to gulping/swallowing air due to my incredibly crapulent form.  I've been out of the pool for a while until lately, but if I recall correctly, as I get my form down and swim more comfortably the symptoms go away...

I have to eat a meal over an hour, preferably two, before I go swimming for any distance or I'll get a stomach ache. A granola bar or Gu won't trigger it. What/when are you eating? Or drinking?

I went through this exact same thing and for me it was gulping air. I haven't been swimming regularly enough lately to fix it completely, but what works for me is a steady exhale underwater and turning and only taking about 1/2 a breath. It may not seem like enough air at first, but it's plenty. If I take a full breath, I have to exhale quicker to get it all out in time for the next breath (if that makes sense) and end up rushing and everything gets craptastic.

That, plus relaxing, (like someone else already mentioned) helps tremendously.

I'd be willing to bet it's gas/bloating from poor breathing pattern. Focus on blowing out through your nose until lungs are fully expelled, and while face is in the water, prior to rolling for breath.

Take a Gas-Ex after your swim to get rid of the stomach pain in the meantime.

Thank you to everyone who has replied. I am thinking it is probaly the breathing. I do feel like I take really "big" breathes sometimes.
I seem to get the stomache aches wether I eat prior to swimming or not. But I am definitly going to pay more attention to see if certain things make it worse.

OK, dammit... I read this thread a few days ago and didn't chime in because I hadn't  had these issues (except for the good burps after a swim).  Well, it must have stuck in my head because I had cramps today on my swim.  See what you caused?

I had a few things going on though.  1) due to weather our gym didn't open until 8:00 so I didn't swim until 8:25.  I normall swim around 7:00 so I had an extra hour and a half awake with no food/coffee etc.  2) I had a time trial today for a 500 yard swim and 3) yesterday was an off day and a snow day here in charlotte so I stayed home and ate like crap snacking on things all day long.

My warm up was fine, but ~150 yards into my time trial I had some cramps in my stomach.  It felt like a combo of ab muscles and stomach ache.  I was definitely pulling harder and working on my stoke, so I can understand the abs getting tight.  Then when I finished I had a nice big burp.  And now 3 hours later I still feel really bloated.  Not fun.

So after re-reading this post, I guess I'm glad my abs were hurting and engaged properly.  But I need to work on my diet to accomodate different swim times.  Especially since races will start anywhere from 7-9.

Thanks for the insight above!

Same here... swam today and my old issue is back (or never went away completely). For me, I'm working too hard, rushing everything and gulping air. If I could just get back to relaxing and taking my time I'm almost positive it wouldn't be nearly so bad (if even an issue at all).

I've had this issue for the last 9 months. I do a 90 minute practice for one of my weekly swims and it was getting so bad tha I was expecting a Mony Python Meaning of Life moment my stomach was so distended after 60 minutes. I could have been a poster girl for malnutirion in Africa. I do know that my breathing technique leaves much to be desired, and I will try the advice to more fully exhale underwater. It is true that as the intensity goes up, the stomach goes out. Some bad swim coach got me into the habit of "burst breathing" when I first started out (holding breath and then exhaling hard at the last second) to help maintain bouyancy and it's been very difficult to break the habit becase it came naturally. I don't swim with him anymore...

In the interim, I found that 1) avoiding processed carbs/refined sugars/large meals in the 90 minutes before the swim really helps, and 2) taking Gas-X just just BEFORE getting in the pool is much more effective in preventing the bloating from happening, than waiting until afer the bloating has started. It almost completely alleviates the problem, and definitely makes the thought of getting into aero position right after much more agreeable. I guess the one drawback is it's harder to tell if the lack of gas/bloating is from the Gas-X or from improving your breathing. But I can live with that mystery on race day :-)

Good luck!
