Swim: team drafting - Cheating

No complaints from me, so long as you don't mind me playing with your feet for 1500 meters.

Drafting in the swim is normal.  In fact, you're supposed to look for a pair of feet to follow.  Or so I've been told.

Few people swim as slowly as I do, so I only get to draft for a bit, until they drop me.   

It's very fair on paper.  In practice, good luck.  That is no different that 2 runners working with each other into the wind.  Granted, usually the person who's feet you're on doesn't know you're there. 

And for those who can draft in the swim, (I can't...I've tried).  It's poor form to pass with 25 meters to go if you've been sitting on feet the whole time.

Is this for Delta. If it is, then I say, "No fair." Or else, let me join you.

Is Rob in the 25-30 AG? I thought he was the same age as me? The age group is 25-29 and because they count your age on Dec. 31st of the year, I moved up to 30-34.

Actually this can't be Delta, as Delta is only 700m. At UBC you guys will definitely be in different heats as men & women go separately. I don't think Rob got into Alcatraz, so I think your plan is shot.

However I still think you two are in different age groups.

Yeah I'm turning 29 this year too.

I'd be up for this for Delta. Rob, you and I had a pretty excellent thing going on last Wednesday. But yeah it might be hard to arrange because people only start one at a time.

Let's think this through a bit. The BT community doesn't think it's cheating, so I think we should try.

In a tri, it's not cheating because there is no rule barring it.  Just because you set it up beforehand (een if it'll probably never happen) doesn't make it wrong, IMHO.

In some swims, however, it is not allowed and would be considered cheating.

miscullen looking at your avatar it would be a pleasure to draft you! Just hope your doing an Ironman or even better a double, triple or even a deca!

I kinda side with Dan on this one.  I've tried to draft in swimming, but people don't keep consistent pace, they change direction, and anytime they sight they slow down.  It's a constant game of bumper cars.

I wonder if the benefit of drafing is more than negated by the strokes cut short / bad catch / involuntary re-routes due to hitting feet for the above reasons.  I think I'll swim solo, thanks, I just haven't been able to make it work for me.

I must get lucky then, I've had a few tris and the two long swims I've done where I've gotten some very good drafts, in the swim along the line of a full mile.  When it works, it really works.  Judging whom to draft off of is hard, though

I've always had really good luck drafting in a pool and the Delta tri is a pool swim. So's the UBC tri.
