Pre-race routine:

Read on BT whiling having breakfast that Ontherun will drive over to race site early and "warm up" by running over to my BF's home to meet me. Ate my crumpet with apple butter, changed into running clothes and while putting on shoes, Ontherun showed up by the door.
Event warmup:

Ran ~2 miles to race site. Registered. Drank some diluted gatorade. Stood around waiting for race start. Jumped around to keep warm.

Comments:

Body cooled down a lot waiting for the race to start. First mile had to be a bit slower than I hoped. Ontherun took off, running a couple of car-length in front of me. It's not easy to run on the icy/slushy road side. Ran in the middle of the road if I can, at times swirled back to the side for approaching cars. Almost slip a few times. Shortly after mile 1, noticed Ontherun slowing down. Caught up with him. Ran together for a bit and he fell back to let a car pass. Then he slowed down more. Turned out he pushed too hard on his first mile, and considered he had already ran 4 miles as the "warm up" (that's longer than the race itself), he started to get tired. I kept my pace, and finished maybe half a minute ahead of him.
Post race
Warm down:

Was thinking of running back to my BF's home. Saw couple other Trifury members and talked with them a bit. Body cooled down. Didn't feel like starting up again. Hopped into Ontherun's car and drove back.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

slushy roads

Event comments:

They have a series of 5k every Saturday in Jan and Feb. Might do it again.

Sounds like fun being able to run to the race for your warmup. I find Winter races to be great motivation to keep up with training. Nice job running through the slush!
