Fifty degrees here in N. MN and the roads were surprisingly clear of road salt and other winter debris. Took a nice easy 20 miles to get used to bike handling again.

Welcome back outdoors! It is nice to be outside when it is nice to ride - I hope this weather sticks and keeps improving!

I have an hour and 50 minute ride scheduled for tommorow.  Have been really playing with the idea of doing it outside, but I'll probably wait.  The bikes just not ready to be taken off the trainer quite yet.

Saw several riders out today, but did the family obligation thing rather than get out myself (children's museum - it was a blast!). I was able to get in a short outdoor run, in shorts, which rocked. I may leave the tri-bike on the trainer and get the roadie off the rack for a little outdoor fun tomorrow. Seems like a lot of work in March to get tires changed out and whatnot to get the indoor bike roadworthy. Probably better to wait until this isn't on the extended forecast...

My thoughts exactly.  I probably stared at my bike sitting on the trainer for at least 5 minutes this morning.  Back and forth, back and forth.  Should I take it off and go outside or stay in and listen to the same songs on my ipod?  This weeks forcast answered my question, possible snow and cold again.  Wasn't a bad ride anyway.

Not riding outside today, but going for a run right after school.  Suppose to be mid 50's again today.  I've run so little outside in this kind of weather I don't even know how to dress for it.  This will be a test run for the 8k this Sunday.

Too bad it will be much colder on Sunday... I also hope to get out tonight for a run, hopefully before the puddles start to freeze again. I am going with light pants, short sleeve top, and a jacket. Something for my ears and hands, which will both probably end up in my pockets after the first 10 minutes. I skipped my long run this weekend in favor of extreme laziness, so I really hope I can get out there tonight.

I thought about a ride, but I get wimpy when it comes to the wind chill when I am riding. I'll take a nice toasty jog instead.

You should be a bit warmer in the cities than up here! If the temps are in the low 50s, I may shed the tights and wear shorts. I will probably stick to a long sleve cycling jersey on top however. Gloves are mandatory until the temps hit 60 for me.

I do my best to plan my training around the weather this time of year. I do a lot of shuffling of days. Any nice days are spent outside on the bike. The trainer workouts and runs are saved for the crappy days.

  • eek! still too much salt out there for the nice bikes.

see, this is why we all need at least 4 bikes

The roads are remarkably clear of road debris up here. Usually I wait until after the first good rain before I break out the "good" bike.

I went for my first outdoor ride of the year yesterday. Took the old hybrid out for a spin as not to get the freshly cleaned tri bike all dirty again. Yeah, it takes a while to get out of trainer mode, doesn't it? And for me, it was also interesting to be on the hybrid again after spending all winter in the aero bars. My pace was not spectacular. But it was sure  nice to be outside!

I took my bike in for tune up before even taking out for the first spin. It will come back on Thursday. I might even catch the bus to the bike shop so I can ride my bike hoem depending on the weather. I ran outside yesterday, I had one layer on my legs and two dry weave shirts and a hat and I got hot by mile 4. I would only add gloves if I was biking.
Can not wait to hit the trails!

Okay, can I just say that after a winter of running and (admittedly slack) trainer rides, getting back on the road should not feel like I need to break out the training wheels. Managed to go all of 8 miles. Wow. A few observations, if I may:

    - Road bike does not equal tri bike. I have spent all my trainer rides trying to get used to a tri bike, and it shows. But I will take feeling a little awkward on the roadie if I rock the tri bike when I finally get it out.

    - 90 cadence does not equal whatever I was riding before. I used to be kinda fast, but I decided to embrace the high cadence approach, and now I am not fast. My gearing is also all funny, either way low on the cassette in the little ring or way high on the cassette on the big ring. Seems I need to either get stronger, or weaker.

    - Fingerless gloves should stay in the garage for another 10 or 15 degrees.

    - Any ride in Red Wing has way more hills than my basement, even rides specifically laid out to avoid hills.

    - Oh, and blech...

    Yep, I'm a teacher.

I did do the run outside today and it felt GREAT!  Went with tights over running shorts on the bottom and that was good.  Had Under Armor on top with a technical shirt and running jacket over that.  Only ran for 31 minutes , but got pretty warm.  Tough decision on if I would were the jacket again or not.  If no wind I would have been fine without it, once I ran into the wind though, brrrrr.  It's just so nice to be outside agai.  Running on the treadmills is so much slower for me.  Usually average 11:00 to 11:30 minute miles.  Today I averaged about 9:30's.  Sundays 8K ought to be a great test.

Did my first outdoor ride today. Unlike others only have ONE bike, so made due with the tri bike. Felt good to get out in the wind.

I sit here at the computer with a scotch and water quite satisfied. I have that wonderful muscle buzz that comes from a tough workout. I have had three excellent days of workouts outside... except for this morning's swim. It felt good to get the tri bike out and open things up a bit. I did some LT intervals and things felt great. I managed a 23.5 mph average for the three seven minute intervals. I'll take that for the first set of intervals for the year.

Things on the trainer are quite different. My LT intervals are at 16.5 mph on the trainer. I find it more difficult sustaining the time for my intervals on the trainer. I also can't reach the same heart rate on the trainer as I can on the road. Everything but the speed may be psychological, but it is nice to hit the pavement.

As I came home tonight I thought about my first outdoor ride last year when I wiped out on some ice...finished the ride not realizing there was blood!  In any case, I am determined to be a *little* more cautious this year...though probably not much!  Way to go everyone on getting out!  The sun made a big difference for me today!

B1, are you sure your speedo wasn't set at KM/hr when you were outside?

Oh, and when I was returning from my el-crappo ride yesterday I chatted a bit with the older gentleman who lives down the road, who was heading out for a 20 mile ride. Dude is a full quarter century older than I, and he looked in fitness and form precisely like he did pre-winter when I tried to keep up with him on a 6 mile run (foolish child). His 'A' race this year is IMFL. I have gone through a longish period where I have found him inspiring. After seeing him yesterday, I think I may just hate him. Yeah, I definately hate him.

Today was my first outdoor ride this season. 9.17 miles, lake calhoun and lake of the isles (2). Nice ride for me and the hubbie who had not been in training. It was amazing! I which no one else was out there- I had to stop for dogs and strollers. I think I could of made much better time without all those peeps. Did I mention how slow my husband was going. I let him lead once around the lake- then I lead, he was fighting to keep up with me.

Overall I am ready for towmmorw's run (human race 8k). I have been streching and today's ride really helped me loosen up. Going out for drink tonight cause truth be told, my run in not until 1:20 in the afternoon. I am ready, excited and full of joy from getting out today and soaking up sun.
